WI vs PAK 2025 1st ODI Match Results
Updated:Pakistan beat West Indies by 5 wickets.
| West Indies | Pakistan |
| 280 (49) | 284/5 (48.5) |
In a nail-biter in Tarouba, Pakistan edged past West Indies by five wickets, chasing 281 with just seven balls to spare. Thanks to a calm and crafty 104-run stand between debutant Hasan Nawaz (63*) and Hussain Talat (41*). Things looked dicey when Rizwan (53) fell with 101 still needed, but the unlikely duo dug deep. Nawaz, dropped early on, made the Windies pay, and with dew aiding their cause, they coolly knocked off the target. Talat smashed 15 off a key over, and before you knew it, Nawaz sealed the win. From stutter to swagger, Pakistan went 1-0 up!

Earlier, West Indies looked set for more after half-centuries from Lewis (60), Hope (55), and Chase (53), but Pakistan’s spinners, and late reverse swing from Afridi (4/51) and Naseem (3/55) kept things in check. The hosts fell from 210/4 to 280 all out as yorkers rained and bails flew. It was a proper tug-of-war, but when it mattered most, Pakistan’s newest faces showed they were ready for the big stage.

WI vs PAK 2025 1st ODI – A Fresh Encounter After Three Years at an Unknown Ground
Since BLR Stadium was officially opened only in 2017, not many teams have played here yet, and Pakistan happens to be one of the teams that hasn’t visited this venue so far. Three years ago, West Indies suffered a 3-0 defeat to Pakistan in Multan, but now, with the added advantage of being more familiar with BLR Stadium, can West Indies manage to turn the tables and beat Pakistan here?

WI vs PAK – The ODI Strength Difference Between Pakistan and West Indies
While Pakistan’s rankings in Test and T20I formats are relatively average, their performance in ODI cricket stands out. Currently ranked 4th, Pakistan is close to the 2nd and 3rd positions, meaning they can challenge those spots. In contrast, West Indies is ranked 10th, a middle-tier team. A clear indicator of this gap was the 2023 ODI World Cup. While Pakistan didn’t make the semifinals, West Indies didn’t even qualify. Pakistan’s failure to reach the semis was due to bad luck, as their group included heavyweights like India, Australia, and New Zealand. In short, Pakistan was playing finals-level matches just to survive the group stage. This shows the gap between the teams in ODI cricket.

WI vs PAK – West Indies Struggling to Find Form
West Indies is facing a tough time in ODI cricket. The primary reason is the gap in player skill and experience. After the retirements of key players like Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, and Kieron Pollard in 2022, the team’s strength dropped significantly. Gayle, one of the greatest batsmen in West Indies history, is a huge loss. Although retirement is inevitable, West Indies hasn’t handled the transition and legacy well. While some younger players show great potential, experience and consistency can’t be forced; they come with time and learning. As a result, West Indies’ ODI ranking has declined since 2022, and they couldn’t qualify for the 2023 World Cup, further reflecting their struggles.

WI vs PAK – Conclusion
As we’ve seen from the earlier points, there’s a noticeable gap between the two teams in terms of recent form and strength. Not only did West Indies fail to win a single match in their series against Pakistan three years ago, but their current form also shows little signs of improvement. In their last six matches, they’ve managed just one win, with four losses and one match abandoned. That one win was against Ireland, ranked 12th in the world. So, the big question is can West Indies capitalise on the fact that Pakistan is unfamiliar with the venue and manage to secure at least 1-2 wins in this series?

WI vs PAK 2025 1st ODI – Venue History&Analysis: Brian Lara Stadium
Stadium Capacity: Around 20,000 spectators
Stadium Address: Brian Lara Stadium Rd, San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago
About the Stadium:
Brian Lara Stadium was officially opened in 2017. However, the construction of this stadium actually began way back in 2007. Due to several unforeseen delays, the project faced multiple setbacks. The main reason for these delays was the severe budget overruns. The initial estimate for the stadium was 150 million USD, but by the time it was completed, the final cost had ballooned to a staggering 340 million USD—almost double the original budget. While there were several other contributing factors, the good news is that after a decade of construction, the stadium was finally finished. And in the same year, it hosted its first international match.

As for the naming of the stadium, it was named after one of the greatest cricketers of the West Indies, Brian Lara. The Trinidad and Tobago government decided to name it after him not just because of his incredible records, such as the unbeaten Test record of 400 runs in a single innings, but more importantly, because of his immense contribution to raising the profile of Trinidad and Tobago as a small nation in the global sporting arena. His association with the sport has brought worldwide attention to the country. Additionally, his contributions to social causes, youth training, and charity work have significantly boosted the international image of Trinidad and Tobago.
