Launched in 2007 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the IPL has grown into a global phenomenon, captivating millions of fans every year. The league usually kicks off between March and May. In the following article, you can get a deeper understanding of IPL history,IPL rules as well as their current teams.
IPL History Overview
The concept of the IPL was created by Lalit Modi, who envisioned a competition that would combine the thrill of cricket with the entertainment of celebrity involvement and high-profile sponsorship. The first IPL officially kicked off in April 2008, with 8 teams competing in its inaugural season. These teams included Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Deccan Chargers, Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

IPL Rules and Format
The IPL follows a round-robin rules and format, where each team plays against every other team twice, once at home and once away. Each team earns 2 points for a victory, while the losing team receives no points. If two or more teams end the league stage with the same number of points, their rankings are determined by the Net Run Rate (NRR), which acts as a tiebreaker. Once the group stage concludes, the tournament transitions into a four-match playoff phase to determine the champions.
- Qualifier 1:The top two teams from the league stage will face off in this match. The winner will secure a direct spot in the final.
- Eliminator:The third and fourth-placed teams will compete in this do-or-die game. The loser of this match will be eliminated from the tournament.
- Qualifier 2:The loser of Qualifier 1 will meet the winner of the Eliminator. The winner of this match will earn the second spot in the final.
- Final:The winners of Qualifiers 1 and 2 will battle it out for the title of IPL 2024 champions.
This structure ensures that the top teams have a slight advantage with a direct route to the final, while also keeping the competition thrilling for lower-ranked teams, who still have a chance to advance through the qualifiers.
