Afghanistan managed to edge out UAE by just four runs in a nail-biter that came alive in the final over. Despite resting several key players, including Rashid Khan, Afghanistan looked in control for most of the match until Asif Khan decided to make things interesting. With 16 needed off the last six balls, Asif launched a counterattack, smashing a four and a six right away. But Fareed Ahmad held his nerve and bowled the over of his life: dot, dot, wicket. Just like that, the game slipped through UAE’s fingers.

Earlier, Afghanistan had built a solid total of 170 thanks to some classy batting by Ibrahim Zadran (48) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (40), with Karim Janat providing the late fireworks. UAE’s chase started brightly with Waseem and Asif both scoring 40s, but spin twins Mujeeb and Noor applied the brakes at just the right time. It was heartbreak for the hosts, who remain winless in the tri-series, but if this was a “dead rubber,” no one told them.

The sensible approach now is to play hard, learn from the experience and use these games as preparation for the future.

Sharjah Cricket Stadium was the vision of Abdul Rahman Bukhatir, built out of his personal passion for the game and his sharp instincts as a businessman. Along with the ground he launched the Cricketers Benefit Fund Series, which gave retired and senior international players of that era a handsome additional income. The journey of CBFS, however, came to an end in 2003 as controversies over match fixing, shifting political equations, ICC’s centralised control of the international calendar and the rise of tournaments such as the ICC Champions Trophy all combined to halt its run. Even so, the stadium has continued to upgrade itself over the years to keep pace with the demands of ODIs, T20Is and other global events.

Though the stadium is officially listed under the Emirates Cricket Board, the day to day management and investment remain firmly with the Bukhatir family. His love and contribution to the game have always been genuine, and the business side was only a reflection of his entrepreneurial nature. That is why, even after Dubai and Abu Dhabi built their own modern venues, Sharjah has retained a unique place in the UAE.
