Pakistan kicked off the tri-series with a bang, outplaying Afghanistan by 39 runs in Sharjah! Skipper Salman Agha led from the front with a cool-headed unbeaten 53, while Sahibzada Farhan came out swinging early, smashing 21 off just 10 balls. Things got a bit wobbly in the middle, but late fireworks from Nawaz, Haris, and Faheem brought Pakistan back to life, racking up 99 in the last nine overs. Even Rashid Khan couldn’t stop the bleeding, getting taken apart by his opposite number, yep, Salman wasn’t messing around.
A brilliant burst from Haris Rauf, including a double-wicket maiden, halted Afghanistan’s chase 🔥

Afghanistan’s chase started with promise. Gurbaz and Rashid looked sharp, and they kept pace until… the 12th over disaster. Haris Rauf charged in with a double-wicket maiden that cracked the innings wide open, and from there, it was a total collapse: five wickets gone for just four runs. Rashid did entertain with a cheeky 39 off 16, but the damage was done. Pakistan’s bowlers, Rauf, Afridi, Nawaz, and Muqeem, were all over it, sealing the deal in style.
Not the result we would have wanted to begin our journey with, but #AfghanAtalan will look to bounce back stronger when they get to the field again. 👍#UAETriNationSeries | #AFGvPAK | #GloriousNationVictoriousTeam pic.twitter.com/dYXZtQvh8g

AFG vs PAK 2025 1st match – Return to Sharjah
Afghanistan and Pakistan once again lock horns in Sharjah. These two sides have met here in four T20Is, sharing the honours with two wins each. Looking at the recent record, Afghanistan claimed a 2-1 series win in 2023.
AFG vs PAK – Head to Head record
In total, Afghanistan and Pakistan have faced each other only seven times in T20Is. Pakistan hold a slight edge with four victories while Afghanistan have won three. But two of those matches were more than a decade ago, making them less relevant now. The other five came between 2022 and 2023, where Afghanistan lead with three wins and two losses. The contests have been extremely close, most decided in the final moments. For instance, in March 2023 Afghanistan scraped through with just one ball left, while in the 2022 Asia Cup Pakistan finished with only four deliveries to spare.

AFG vs PAK – Recent T20I form
Talking about Pakistan first, they have won three of their last five T20Is against West Indies and Bangladesh. These games were only a month ago, showing Pakistan have been in regular match practice. The results are not overwhelming but fairly steady. On the other side, Afghanistan last played in December 2024. They also had three wins and two losses, but that was eight months back. After such a long break, it is hard to judge their rhythm and the players will need time to adjust. Moreover, Sharjah is a venue where bat and ball rarely stay in balance, and it will truly test Afghanistan’s adaptability.

AFG vs PAK – Conclusion
For this contest, Pakistan look to have a slightly higher chance of winning. Even though Afghanistan have done better in the recent head-to-head record, this is their first outing of the year, while Pakistan have already played 14 matches in 2025. Despite having mixed results, the Pakistan players are in the groove and do not need to readjust. This advantage might be decisive in the opening clash, though in the following matches much will depend on how quickly Afghanistan settle into their rhythm.

AFG vs PAK 2025 1st match – Venue History&Analysis: Sharjah Cricket Stadium
Stadium Capacity: Around 39,000 spectators
Stadium Address: Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Second Industrial Street, Industrial Area 5, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates
About the Stadium:
Sharjah Cricket Stadium is one of the most celebrated international cricket venues in the UAE. The stadium was completed in 1982 and formally inaugurated in April 1984. What made the inauguration historic was that the very first match held here was not a domestic game but an international contest. It was none other than the inaugural Asia Cup, which also happened to be the first-ever international tournament organised by the Asian Cricket Council. Thus, Sharjah began its journey with three remarkable firsts – the stadium’s maiden international fixture, the opening edition of the Asia Cup, and the ACC’s very first international event. These milestones instantly placed Sharjah on the global cricketing map.

The first Asia Cup match at Sharjah featured Sri Lanka against Pakistan. Pakistan batted first and made 187 runs. Chasing 188, Sri Lanka reached 190 for five with 15 balls to spare. The architect of this win was Sri Lanka’s number three batter Roy Dias. Coming in early, he took charge and stayed unbeaten, scoring a well-crafted 57 off 95 balls to earn the Man of the Match award. Yet despite this memorable victory, Sri Lanka could not claim the title and finished runners-up to India in the inaugural Asia Cup.
