Pakistan pulled off a dramatic turnaround in Sharjah, bouncing back from a shaky 80 for 5 to post a solid 171, thanks to Fakhar Zaman’s unbeaten 77 and Mohammad Nawaz’s fiery 37*. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though, Pakistan’s top order stumbled early, but some woeful UAE fielding opened the door. Once Fakhar and Nawaz got going, they slammed 69 runs in the final four overs, turning what looked like a modest total into a match-winner.

UAE’s chase never really got out of second gear. Abrar Ahmed made a dream return with a magical spell of 4 for 9, slicing through the top and middle order like it was practice. Sharafu fought hard with a gritty 68, but the damage was done. With the win, Pakistan not only secured the game by 31 runs but also booked their ticket to Sunday’s final alongside Afghanistan, leaving the hosts, UAE, out of the race.

This is the penultimate game for the UAE in this tri nation series, and to keep their hopes alive they must first overcome Pakistan and then beat Afghanistan. The question is whether UAE, who have never beaten Pakistan in T20Is, can finally pull off a win to stay in the race.

Pakistan stand with two wins and one loss from their three games so far. Even if they slip against UAE, the path for the hosts is still almost impossible. With zero wins and two defeats, UAE need back to back victories against both Pakistan and Afghanistan to create a three way tie at two wins each. That would force an eliminator to decide the finalists, a situation neither Pakistan nor Afghanistan would want. As long as UAE lose even one of the two remaining matches, the Final will be contested by Pakistan and Afghanistan. With Pakistan having already beaten UAE twice in T20Is including this series, the chances of an upset look very slim.

PAK vs UAE – UAE must fight with everything

With two defeats, UAE must treat their last two matches as must win encounters. Only with two straight victories can they bring all three teams level and hope for a Final spot. The first hurdle is Pakistan. From the four matches so far, the bowling strengths of the three sides look similar, so the real difference will come from the batting. For UAE, Muhammad Waseem, Rahul Chopra and Asif Khan have all registered half centuries, though not in the same game. If the three of them each deliver around 35 runs in the same match, with the rest of the line up adding steady 10s, UAE might still have a chance.

In my view Pakistan remain overwhelming favourites, with around an eighty percent chance of victory. UAE can still dream of a twenty percent possibility, and that is largely because they are playing at home. The other factor is that across all three teams the bowling has been evenly matched, without any side showing clear dominance.

About the Stadium:

Sharjah Cricket Stadium holds a special place in cricket history as the first international ground of the UAE. Its fame grew through the Cricketers Benefit Fund Series launched by Abdul Rahman Bukhatir, and it also hosted the very first Asia Cup. The tournament, running for over forty years, remains the only platform where Asia’s Associate nations can measure themselves against the giants of the cricketing world. For Full Member teams, scheduling brings added layers such as competition intensity, political sensitivities, broadcasting and sponsorship interests, which is why smaller Asian nations value the qualifiers so highly.

Although Sharjah is the birthplace of the Asia Cup, it has not hosted the event often. From 1984 up to 2025, only three editions were played here in 1984, 1988 and 1995. The UAE featured even less, appearing only in 2004 and 2008. Unless a country is a Full Member of the ICC, it must win the qualifier to reach the group stage. On both occasions the UAE struggled, losing both matches and going down by an average of more than 110 runs. Yet for the UAE and Sharjah Cricket Stadium, being the birthplace of the Asia Cup remains a matter of pride.
