AUS vs SA 2025 3rd ODI Match Results
Updated:Australia beat South Africa by 276 runs.
| Australia | South Africa |
| 431/2 (50) | 155 (24.5) |
Australia put on an absolute show in Mackay, smashing a jaw-dropping 431 for 2, their second-highest ODI total ever. Travis Head, Mitch Marsh, and young gun Cam Green all hit tons, with Green blasting his in just 47 balls! Not to be left out, Alex Carey added a quickfire 50, while South Africa’s bowlers were left chasing leather all over the field. It was fireworks from ball one, and by the end, the Aussie scoreboard looked more like a phone number than a cricket score.

For just the second time in ODI history, the top three all scored centuries! Alex Carey also made 50* coming in at four, as Australia posted a massive 2-431!#AUSvSA live blog: https://t.co/E8dkFmvx1s pic.twitter.com/ObInu7g5br

In response, South Africa never stood a chance. They stumbled early and were all out for just 155. The real star of the second innings? Cooper Connolly. The 22-year-old took 5 for 22, becoming the youngest Aussie ever to grab a five-for in ODIs. With this massive 276-run victory, Australia avoided a series whitewash and reminded everyone why they’re still a powerhouse at home.

AUS vs SA 2025 3rd ODI – Is GBR Arena a bowler-friendly pitch, and will it come down to the bowlers?
In my earlier write-up about the first match at GBR Arena, I mentioned that this ground tends to favour the bowlers a bit. Now, with three of Australia’s main bowlers missing from the squad, some may feel they have little chance of winning. But is that really the case?

AUS vs SA – Bowlers deciding the match or batters taking charge?
Cricket is a team sport, and to win, a side should ideally be strong in all departments. However, in any team of individuals, there will always be variables. At the moment, Australia’s bowling attack is the concern. With the main bowlers unavailable, does it mean they cannot win at all? Not exactly. While GBR Arena is bowler-friendly, that is only in relative terms. Even if the conditions do not heavily favour the bowlers, they simply need to perform steadily, avoid too many mistakes, and keep the runs conceded within a manageable range. The rest can be left to the batters. The pressure on the batting unit will be higher, but that is the nature of a team sport.

AUS vs SA – Australia’s batting line-up
If we go with the earlier approach of not expecting the bowlers to produce exceptional spells, but just to control the runs, let us assume the target to be above 250. For Australia’s batting line-up, this is not an impossible task. The key will be for Travis Head, Steven Smith, Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, and Glenn Maxwell to average around 40 each. If the remaining six batters contribute an average of nine runs each, the team will comfortably reach the 250 mark. Earlier this year in March, Australia managed 264 against India even without their full-strength bowling attack. Scoring over 250 against South Africa should not be more difficult than that.

AUS vs SA – Conclusion
While most of the talk has been about Australia’s current difficulties, South Africa too have been inconsistent. In fact, both teams are in a similar position, relying on minimising errors and allowing their batters to push the winning score higher. To be honest, even without mentioning that Australia are higher in the world rankings, purely on current form, I would still back Australia to win this one.

Average batting stats of Australian batsmen from the last five matches
| Players | Runs | SR | HR |
| Travis Head | 30.6 | 119.18 | 59* |
| Steven Smith | 27.6 | 80.32 | 73 |
| Josh Inglis | 35.6 | 84.30 | 120* |
| Alex Carey | 52.2 | 100.39 | 77* |
| Glenn Maxwell | 11.2 | 92.57 | 32* |
AUS vs SA 2025 3rd ODI – Venue History&Analysis: Great Barrier Reef Arena
Stadium Capacity: Around 10,000 spectators
Stadium Address: 89 Juliet Street, South Mackay QLD 4740, Australia
About the Stadium:
As mentioned earlier, the GBR Arena got its present name in 2018 when the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority renamed the venue to promote the Great Barrier Reef. At that time, the reef faced a serious crisis due to rising global temperatures causing warmer sea water and large-scale coral bleaching. The idea was that cricket fans at the stadium would connect the name to the reef, encouraging more people to visit. From the stadium or even from the town, it is not far to reach the reef, whether by boat or flight. The journey usually takes only one and a half to three hours.

Unfortunately, after the renaming in 2018, tourist numbers did not increase. In fact, the footfall was even lower than in 2017. Things became worse in 2019 when the pandemic arrived, and visitor numbers fell to the lowest levels, with the entire year recording less than one million visitors. Of course, that was understandable due to the pandemic situation. However, even by 2024, the annual visitors were only around ninety percent of the 2017 numbers. This makes 2017 stand out as the year with the highest tourist arrivals to the Great Barrier Reef in the past fifteen years, which is quite a bittersweet fact to think about.
