Updated:South Africa beat Australia by 84 runs.

South Africa are on a roll, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon! With a commanding 84-run win in the second ODI, they wrapped up yet another series against Australia, their fifth straight since 2016. Matthew Breetzke was on fire with 88, continuing his dream start to ODI cricket, while Tristan Stubbs chipped in a slick 74. Even though the Proteas stumbled late with the bat, their total of 277 proved more than enough. Enter Lungi Ngidi: 5 wickets, all class, and all crucial. Australia, meanwhile, had one standout, Josh Inglis with 87, but the rest of the lineup crumbled.

The Aussie chase never really got going. Ngidi and Burger tore through the top order, leaving them reeling at 7 for 2 before the crowd even settled. Dropped catches gave the hosts a lifeline, but they couldn’t make it count. Inglis fought hard, smashing his way past fifty, but he lacked backup. Once Ngidi returned, it was game over; he cleaned up the tail and sealed the deal. With this win, South Africa not only clinched the series early but also handed Australia a fourth straight home ODI loss. Yikes.

AUS vs SA 2025 2nd ODI – First ODI at this venue since 1992

Great Barrier Reef Arena is hosting its first international match in over three decades. The last and only ODI played here was back in 1992, featuring India and Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, that game was abandoned after just two deliveries due to heavy rain. Since then, no international side has stepped on this ground.

AUS vs SA – A Completely Unknown Surface

Although the Great Barrier Reef Arena has existed for many years, it has only hosted a single international match so far. Naturally, most fans would be unfamiliar with how the pitch behaves. As per available reports, the GBR Arena tends to offer a slight edge to the bowlers. During dry weather, the surface remains hard and flat early on, which generally helps the pacers. Spinners, on the other hand, may only come into play once the pitch wears down a bit. That said, the advantage is marginal. This is not the kind of wicket that entirely dictates outcomes eventually, the match will depend on how well the batters can handle the challenge thrown by the bowlers.

AUS vs SA – Recent ODI Form of Both Teams

Interestingly, both teams share a very similar ODI record in 2025. Excluding the ICC Champions Trophy, they have only played two ODIs this year, and both ended up on the losing side. These matches were played back in February. Looking at the numbers, Australia’s condition appears more worrying. They averaged just 136 runs across the two games, whereas South Africa posted an average of 328. That’s a huge gap. The primary reason behind Australia’s poor showing was the absence of several first-choice players. Key fast bowlers like Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc were all unavailable, along with middle-order batter Mitchell Marsh. So Australia not only struggled with bowling depth but also lacked stability in their batting unit.

AUS vs SA – Conclusion

This match at GBR Arena could very well be decided by how well the bowlers perform. The pitch might give a slight early advantage to the team batting first, but overall, both sides will need their bowling units to step up. Looking at Australia’s current squad, their bowling lineup seems under immense pressure. Unless some of the big names return before match day, it could be a challenging outing for them.

AUS vs SA 2025 2nd ODI – Venue History&Analysis: Great Barrier Reef Arena

Stadium Capacity: Around 10,000 spectators

Stadium Address: 89 Juliet Street, South Mackay QLD 4740, Australia

About the Stadium:

Great Barrier Reef Arena is a multi-purpose sporting venue located in Mackay, Australia. It was originally established around the year 1968, which is also when the first recorded match took place at the ground. At that time, it was known as Ray Mitchell Oval. The name was changed to its current title in 2018, primarily to support local tourism and create stronger branding for the region. Since the world-famous Great Barrier Reef is located not too far from the stadium, the name made perfect sense as it not only sounds iconic but also helps promote the area as a tourist destination.

As mentioned earlier, while the ground opened in 1968, it wasn’t until 1992 that it hosted its first international cricket match. Interestingly, that game entered the record books as the shortest ODI in history. The match was between India and Sri Lanka and, believe it or not, lasted just two deliveries. Yes, only two balls were bowled, not even two overs. The reason? Heavy rain forced an early stoppage and the game was abandoned. Fascinatingly, before it even began, days of rain had already reduced it to a 20-over match. Helicopters were used to dry the field, but despite the effort, rain returned right after the start, and it had to be called off.
