Zimbabwe T20I Tri-Series 2025 1st Match Results
updated:South Africa beat Zimbabwe by 5 wickets.
| Zimbabwe | South Africa |
| 141/6 (20) | 142/5 (15.5) |
South Africa kicked off their T20I season in style, cruising to a five-wicket win over Zimbabwe in Harare. Despite a shaky start at 38 for 3, debutant Rubin Hermann (45) and Dewald Brevis (41 off just 17 balls!) turned up the heat with a fiery 72-run stand. Brevis even treated Burl to a brutal over that went for 25 runs, including three towering sixes. With Corbin Bosch chipping in a cool 23* off 15, the Proteas wrapped up the chase in under 16 overs.
Three overs remaining, Zimbabwe are 121/3

But let’s not forget Zimbabwe’s fight. Sikandar Raza, playing his 39th game as captain, hit a gutsy 54* to lift his team to 141. Richard Ngarava made early inroads with a fiery spell, snatching 3 for 35 and becoming Zimbabwe’s top T20I wicket-taker in the process. George Linde also made a solid case for more game time, grabbing 3 wickets while keeping it tight. Still, the day belonged to South Africa’s youth, and that explosive Brevis blitz.

ZIM vs RSA 2025 1st T20I: Can Zimbabwe Pull Off a Giant-Killing Upset Against the Proteas?
Zimbabwe, a mid-ranked T20I side, are once again up against a proper heavyweight in South Africa. Not only is there a clear gap in international exposure, but the overall squad depth is also miles apart.
South Africa come in with a full-strength lineup packed with world-class names. In contrast, Zimbabwe really have only one true match-winner in Raza. Muzarabani and Burl have their moments, yes, but they lack consistency and tend to blow hot and cold – which becomes a big issue when facing top-tier teams like the Proteas.
And to make things even tougher, the third team in this tri-series is New Zealand – another top-level side. So, let’s be honest, Zimbabwe’s chances of getting a win here are pretty slim. Unless something dramatic happens, it’s going to be a real uphill task for them.
ZIM vs RSA – Can Zimbabwe Make Home Advantage Count?
Harare is the proud home ground of Team Zimbabwe, and ideally, they should be calling the shots here. But reality paints a different picture. Out of 6 T20Is played between Zimbabwe and South Africa at this very venue, Zimbabwe have won just once – and that too way back in 2010. Since then, it’s been all one-way traffic – 5 straight losses over the last 15 years. And what’s more worrying? Even though Harare usually favours the team batting first, Zimbabwe have lost regardless of batting first or chasing. So much for home advantage, boss.
ZIM vs RSA – Full-Strength Proteas or Rotation Mode?
As we mentioned, RSA have a stunning 5-1 record vs ZIM at Harare – a whopping 83.3% win rate. With a full squad available and firing, another win for South Africa looks almost inevitable. But here’s the twist – this is a tri-series involving ZIM, RSA and NZ. And guess who South Africa are playing next? Yes, New Zealand – one of the most dangerous sides out there. So rotation is definitely on the cards. If the Proteas decide to rest their big boys before that high-voltage clash, Zimbabwe might just sneak in an upset. Might, we said. But then again, if you’re hoping the other team underperforms so you can win… not the best mindset.
ZIM vs RSA – Underdog Zimbabwe vs Two World-Class Teams
According to ICC T20I rankings, New Zealand is ranked No. 4, South Africa No. 6, and Zimbabwe… all the way down at No. 12. The gulf in class is quite obvious. Zimbabwe’s biggest issue? Squad depth – or rather, the lack of it. Against top-tier teams, they’re already struggling, and even against B-grade sides, they’re barely holding on. Muzarabani is their only quality pace option, but without enough support, he’s left carrying the entire attack. Others like Ngarava and Jongwe either lack consistency or are too inexperienced to shine at this level.
And then comes the biggest concern – over-dependence on skipper Raza. If opponents neutralize him early, the entire batting collapses like a house of cards. Just remember the game vs Netherlands in 2023 – once Raza was contained, Zimbabwe folded for 120. Not to forget, since the 2016 T20 World Cup exit, Zimbabwe haven’t played enough high-intensity matches. That lack of exposure is clearly showing in both their mental strength and tactical execution.
ZIM vs RSA – Pre-Match Prediction
From Zimbabwe’s point of view, this tri-series looks more like a learning opportunity than a real shot at silverware. As mentioned earlier, the depth problem has no short-term fix. The team is too reliant on three key players – Raza, Muzarabani, and Ervine. The rest either lack bite or are still too raw to make a serious impact. Add to that the absence of regular international exposure, and it’s a steep mountain to climb.
Realistically speaking, Zimbabwe’s best hope is that South Africa and New Zealand rest some of their A-listers. If that happens, maybe – just maybe – they can steal a win or two. But let’s not expect miracles. Anything more than that? Well… hope is a beautiful thing, but results need more than just hope.

ZIM vs RSA 2025 1st T20I – Key Player
Zimbabwe’s Key Players to Watch
- Sikandar Raza – Zimbabwe’s lone world-class player averages 35 (SR 140) vs SA and must bowl 4 tight overs (econ 7.2). His all-round show (50+ & 2 wickets) is their only path to competitiveness.
- Blessing Muzarabani – The 1.96m quick thrives at Harare (4/18 vs BAN 2022). His steep bounce targets SA’s openers; early wickets (Powerplay econ 6.9) could spark an upset.
- Ryan Burl – Zimbabwe’s best spin-hitter (SR 150+) must counter Shamsi/Markram. His straight hitting (42% of sixes) suits Harare’s dimensions, preventing mid-innings collapse.
- Clive Madande – The rising star’s *44* vs IND* showcased his fearless strokeplay. If top-order fails, his innovative scoops (31% dot balls) could salvage respectability vs Rabada/Nortje.

South Africa’s Key Players to Watch
- Quinton de Kock – The explosive opener averages 45 with a 145 strike rate against Zimbabwe, making him crucial for Powerplay dominance. His ability to capitalize on Harare’s bounce (favors his cuts/pulls) could dismantle Zimbabwe’s inexperienced attack early.
- Heinrich Klaasen – A spin destroyer with a 160+ strike rate vs Zimbabwe, Klaasen’s sweeping prowess neutralizes Raza/Masakadza. His middle-overs aggression (career SR 142) prevents slowdowns, often turning 140 into 160+.
- Kagiso Rabada – His 6.8 economy vs Zimbabwe reflects relentless control. Harare’s extra bounce amplifies his short-ball threat (22% of his T20 wickets), targeting Zimbabwe’s fragile top order (Ervine averages 12.6 against him).
- David Miller – The finisher averages 50+ vs Zimbabwe, excelling in death overs (SR 168 vs Jongwe/Ngarava). With Harare’s short straight boundaries, his six-hitting could add 20+ runs late.

ZIM vs RSA 2025 1st T20I – Venue History&Analysis: Harare Sports Club Cricket Stadium
Stadium Capacity: Approximately 10,000 spectators
Stadium Address: 3 Lanark Road, Harare, Zimbabwe
Stadium History: Harare Sports Club was established in 1900, and the stadium itself was built in the same year. It is one of the oldest cricket grounds in Zimbabwe and serves as the home venue for the Zimbabwean national team. The stadium is most famous for the beautiful jacaranda trees that surround it, which bloom with striking purple flowers between October and December each year. Another iconic feature is the well-known Castle Corner bar, a popular gathering place for the most passionate Zimbabwean cricket fans, where they cheer and show unwavering support for their team.
Stadium Features: Harare Sports Club Cricket Stadium offers fairly balanced playing conditions, meaning that during the early stages of a match, neither batters nor bowlers have a clear advantage. However, as the game progresses, the pitch tends to deteriorate. Combined with the naturally slow outfield, this makes it increasingly difficult for batters. The ball’s bounce becomes irregular, and the pace slows down, making boundary shots (especially fours) harder to achieve. According to recent statistics from the last 50 T20I matches played at this venue, teams batting first have averaged 153 runs, while teams batting second have averaged 133 runs.
Advantage Analysis: Although Harare Sports Club is Zimbabwe’s home ground and should, in theory, offer them a home advantage, the venue heavily relies on the strength of the bowling unit. This puts Zimbabwe at a disadvantage due to the gap in bowling depth between the two sides. South Africa boasts an elite pace attack, Rabada’s express short balls, Nortje’s deliveries clocking over 155 km/h, and Jansen’s steep, awkward bounce from his tall frame—all of which effectively neutralize Zimbabwe’s batting strength. On the other hand, Zimbabwe’s only notable fast bowler is Muzarabani, highlighting a clear imbalance between the two teams in bowling firepower.
Furthermore, in their head-to-head T20I record at this ground, South Africa has won five matches compared to Zimbabwe’s one, with Zimbabwe’s only win coming 15 years ago. Therefore, unless South Africa fields a heavily rotated squad, Zimbabwe faces a significant uphill battle to claim victory.
