RSA vs PAK 2024 1st ODI – Agha’s Finishing Magic Steal a Nail-Biter for Pakistan Against South Africa
Pakistan beat South Africa by 3 wickets with 22-year-old opener Saim Ayub leading the way. Ayub played a brilliant innings of 109 runs off 119 balls, his second career century, to anchor Pakistan’s chase of 240. The match turned when Ayub and Salman Ali Agha put together a 141-run partnership for the fifth wicket, steadying the innings after an early wobble. Although Ayub was dismissed with 39 runs still to get, Salman’s unbeaten 82 guided Pakistan home with three balls to spare. It was a very close contest and an exciting chase. So what did Pakistan do a little better? Let us find out.

Saim Ayub’s Record Smash and Salman Ali Agha’s All-Round Masterclass
The sensational debut campaign by Saim Ayub reached new heights including 10 fours and 3 sixes, anchoring the chase after early wickets fell with the team at 60. With this outstanding performance, he broke Brian Lara’s nearly 31 year old record as the youngest player to score an ODI century while chasing against South Africa.

Here comes the second hero, Salman Ali Agha. He took 4 wickets for just 32 runs in his eight overs, effectively choking South Africa’s middle overs. Then he calmed the nerves in the tense chase by scoring 82 not out off 90 balls.

RSA vs PAK 2024 1st ODI – Klaasen’s Lone Star Shine Amid South Africa’s Middle-Order Collapse
South Africa got off to a strong start with a 70‑run opening stand between Tony de Zorzi, who made 33 off 25 balls, and Ryan Rickelton, who scored 36 off 38. However, the middle order collapsed against Agha’s spin. Heinrich Klaasen’s 86 gave them some hope, but they fell short in the later overs and he remained the lone standout performer.

RSA vs PAK 2024 1st ODI – How Pakistan’s Green Shirts Keep Outsmarting the Proteas
The battle was neck and neck from start to finish. The biggest difference, however, was Pakistan’s trump card, Salman Ali Agha. His spell really unsettled the South African batters and put out their fire. With a ODI win rate of about 72 per cent against South Africa over the last ten years, Green Shirts seem to know how to handle the Proteas. At the same time, South Africa’s batting line-up looks solid, especially with Heinrich Klaasen anchoring the middle order, so the rivalry between Klaasen and Agha will be worth following.

RSA vs PAK 2024 1st ODI – Venue History&Analysis: Boland Park
Stadium Capacity: Around 10,000 spectators.
Stadium Address: Langenhoven Ave, Boland Agricultural Show Grnds, Paarl, 7646, South Africa.
About the Stadium:
Boland Park was officially established in 1996. The reason for this relatively late development was mainly that Paarl and the broader Boland region historically had smaller populations and less urban growth compared to major South African cities such as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The first men’s ODI at Boland Park was played on 27 January 1997 in a tri‑series match between India and Zimbabwe. Interestingly, that match ended in a tie, which is a rare result in ODIs and occurs in less than one per cent of games.

At that time, India had already been a World Cup champion and a finalist, while Zimbabwe was still a developing team. However, there was a silver lining as Zimbabwe’s Eddo Brandes took five wickets for 41 runs in 9.5 overs. His spell broke crucial partnerships and slowed India’s chase at several points. This performance remains one of Zimbabwe’s most memorable ODI spells. Coincidentally, no other ODI at Boland Park has ended in a tie since then.
