About the Stadium: 

The stadium was officially inaugurated in 1986. Since then, it has developed into one of South Africa’s premier international cricket venues. The first-ever Test match at this ground was played in 1995, between South Africa and England. This match held special significance as it was among the early Tests in the newly democratic South Africa, symbolising the country’s return to the global sporting stage.

Before 1991, South Africa was banned from international cricket because of the apartheid policy. Apartheid, which lasted from 1948 to 1994, was a system of legally enforced racial segregation and discrimination introduced by the South African government. It was only on 27 April 1994 that the country held its first democratic elections, allowing people of all races to vote. Nelson Mandela became the first Black president of South Africa. After this, a new constitution was adopted which supported equality, human rights, democracy and freedom for all.
