ENG vs SA 2025 1st T20I Match Result
Updated:South Africa beat England by 14 runs. (DLS Method)

South Africa pulled off a dramatic 14-run win over England in the first T20I of their series, despite the match being cut short by rain and the DLS method playing a role. The game got off to a delayed start in Cardiff, thanks to soggy conditions, and was reduced to nine overs per side. South Africa set a competitive total of 97/5 in 7.5 overs, with captain Aiden Markram leading the charge with a quickfire 28. Dewald Brevis and Donovan Ferreira added fireworks too, putting up 36 off 15 balls. But the rain ended their innings early, and England was given a target of just 69 from 30 balls.

England’s chase was always going to be tough, needing 13.8 runs per over. Things went downhill quickly as they lost key wickets like Phil Salt and Harry Brook for ducks. Even Jos Buttler’s 25 off 11 balls couldn’t rescue them. Luke Wood made an impact with the ball, taking two wickets, including a golden duck for Ryan Rickelton. Despite a few sparks from Sam Curran and Liam Dawson, South Africa’s bowlers, led by Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, sealed the win. It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Proteas, though, as they had to cope with injuries to Lungi Ngidi and Keshav Maharaj ahead of the next match.

ENG vs SA 2025 1st T20I – Head to Head Record: England with Four Losses from Five Matches
After the conclusion of the ODI series, England will face South Africa in the T20I series, which will start after a two-day break. Looking at the previous T20I record between the two teams, England has lost four out of five matches. However, with the team’s transformation and their impressive performance in the last ODI, could England manage to perform well in the T20I series?
ENG vs SA – T20I After the ODI
Just three days ago, England finished their ODI series with South Africa, where South Africa won 2-1. England lost the first two games but made a strong comeback in the final match, winning by 342 runs. They not only broke the venue’s highest score record but also set a new record for the largest margin of victory in ODI history. This result was unexpected, especially with Joe Root and Jacob Bethell scoring centuries. For the upcoming T20I series, while there are some changes in the lineup, the core players remain, such as Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, and Adil Rashid. If their form continues, they may end South Africa’s three-match winning streak in T20Is.

ENG vs SA – South Africa’s Recent T20I Record
After reviewing South Africa’s recent T20I record, it’s clear they have lost four out of their last five matches, but most opponents were top-ranked teams, especially Australia, ranked second in the world. In their series against Australia, South Africa won one match and came very close in the two losses. In the first loss, Australia won by 17 runs, and in the second, South Africa pushed them to the limit, with Australia winning with one ball left. This shows South Africa’s strength. They beat weaker teams easily but struggle against stronger sides, giving the impression that they are neither too strong nor weak. However, against third-ranked England, South Africa has won four out of five encounters, which is intriguing.

ENG vs SA – Conclusion
For this upcoming series between the two teams, I’d say it’s a 50-50 chance for both sides. Either team could win, and it wouldn’t be a surprise regardless of who comes out on top. England’s world ranking speaks for itself, so their victory wouldn’t be unexpected. Meanwhile, South Africa has a 4-1 record against England in their last five encounters, so their winning wouldn’t seem unusual either. Let’s just watch the game and see how it unfolds.
ENG vs SA 2025 1st T20I – Venue: Sophia Gardens, Cardiff
Stadium Capacity: Around 15,600 spectators
Stadium Address: Sophia Gardens Cricket Ground, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom
About the Stadium:
Sophia Gardens was completed and opened to the public in 1858. However, at that time, the cricket ground was not yet established. It was only in 1967, when Glamorgan County Cricket Club moved in and leased part of the land from the government, that the site was transformed into Sophia Gardens Cricket Ground. The ground hosted its first international match in 1999, during the ICC World Cup, with Australia facing New Zealand. It wasn’t until 2007 that the stadium was upgraded to host Test matches, reaching its current capacity. After the upgrade, Sophia Gardens hosted its first Test match, which was part of the famous Ashes series between England and Australia.

This match not only marked Sophia Gardens’ first Test, but also saw Australia setting a historic record. Four Australian players scored centuries, a new record for the most centuries in a single Ashes match. The players were Simon Katich (122), Ricky Ponting (150), *Marcus North (125)**, and Brad Haddin (121). This record still stands in Ashes history. Though England didn’t have standout individual performances, they managed to draw the match thanks to the determined defence of James Anderson and Monty Panesar, with England finishing at 435 & 252/9 compared to Australia’s 674/6.
