England put on a fireworks show in Southampton, racking up a jaw-dropping 414 for 5, led by young gun Jacob Bethell’s first professional ton, an electrifying 110 off just 82 balls. He and Joe Root (a smooth 100) laid the foundation with a mammoth 182-run stand, while Jos Buttler (62* off 32) provided a final flurry. The South African bowlers looked completely out of sorts, dishing up 27 extras and getting belted to all corners, poor Nandre Burger got hit for 95 in his 10 overs, the worst in SA’s ODI history!

But the real carnage came when Jofra Archer got the new ball. He tore through the top order with 4 for 18, sending South Africa tumbling to a measly 72 all out. Adil Rashid cleaned up the tail, and England walked away with a 342-run win, their biggest ever in ODIs. South Africa looked shell-shocked, and even the trophy lift after winning the series felt more like a formality than a celebration. All eyes now turn to Bethell, England might just have found their next big star.

ENG vs SA 2025 3rd ODI – England with no way back
England have already lost the opening two games of the series, which means the trophy is out of reach. But as the home side, they surely would not want to hand over a clean sweep to their opponents. This game becomes their last chance to save some pride.
ENG vs SA – The struggles of transition
Yes, transition brings inconsistency, and that is exactly what I have seen from England in the first two matches. The issue is in both batting and bowling. Jamie Smith scored a fluent 54 in the first game but followed it with a diamond duck in the second. Players like Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks showed the same pattern, averaging only 9.8 runs in the first innings but bouncing back with 50.4 in the second. On the bowling side, only Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer looked steady, while others struggled for control. The talent is there, but England’s instability is costing them consistency.

ENG vs SA – Can consistency seal a 3-0 sweep for South Africa?
Compared to England, South Africa have looked much more settled. Openers Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton have provided strong starts in both games, adding 117 runs in the first match and 84 in the second. While a few players have shown some inconsistency, it is far less noticeable than in England’s camp. In the bowling department, Keshav Maharaj has been outstanding, picking up 6 wickets in two games at an economy rate of just 4.45. If Kagiso Rabada makes a return, the pairing of Maharaj and Rabada could put tremendous pressure on any batting side.

ENG vs SA – Conclusion
To sum up, if England continue to display this level of inconsistency, a 3-0 whitewash for South Africa would not surprise me. England did show some improvement in the second game compared to the first, but during this period of transition their stability remains questionable.

ENG vs SA 2025 3rd ODI – Venue: The Rose Bowl, Southampton
Stadium Capacity: Approximately 25,000 spectators
Stadium Address: Botley Rd, West End, Southampton SO30 3XH, United Kingdom
About the Stadium:
The Rose Bowl in Southampton, England, is a modern international cricket venue that shares its name with the famous stadium in California, USA. From 2012 it was known as the Ageas Bowl after the insurance company Ageas took over naming rights, and in 2024 it was renamed Utilita Bowl with a new sponsorship. Though the venue was established only in 2001 and began hosting international matches from 2003, it has already staged 62 games across Tests, ODIs and T20Is in just 22 years. Most notably, the inaugural ICC World Test Championship Final was also played here, with India and New Zealand fighting for the crown. New Zealand eventually lifted the first WTC title after an intense contest.

India batted first and managed only 210 runs. The star was New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson, who bowled 22 overs for 31 runs and picked up five wickets. With this spell he became the tenth Kiwi to claim a five-wicket haul against India in Tests, following Trent Boult. In the second innings Jamieson added two more wickets, delivering 24 overs for just 30 runs at an economy of 1.25, again putting India under pressure. Chasing the target, New Zealand scored 249 and 140 for 2, outplaying India’s 217 and 170, and carried the inaugural WTC trophy home.
