ENG vs SA 2025 2nd ODI Match Result
Updated:South Africa beat England by 5 runs.

| 330/8 (50) | 325/9 (50) |
South Africa snuck past England in a nail-biter at Lord’s, edging them out by just five runs to seal the series with a game to spare! Matthew Breetzke, fresh off a hamstring injury (and born after South Africa’s last ODI series win in England), played like a seasoned pro, smashing 85 and anchoring a total of 330. He teamed up with Tristan Stubbs for a fiery 147-run stand, while England’s part-time spinners were treated like bowling machines. Despite a late burst from Jofra Archer, who nearly turned superhero in the final over, England came up just short, literally one big hit away.

Joe Root, Jacob Bethell, and Jos Buttler all scored fifties, but none went the distance, and that made the difference. Buttler’s reverse-slap six was pure class, but even that couldn’t save the day after South Africa’s bowlers tightened the screws. Lungi Ngidi’s slower ball to dismiss Buttler at the death was a dagger, and Burger’s double-strike later sealed England’s fate. It’s now eight losses in 11 ODIs for England in 2025, and with the series already wrapped up, South Africa are partying early. A well-earned win, and a history-making one for Breetzke and crew!

ENG vs SA 2025 2nd ODI – Eight years later they meet again at Lord’s Cricket Ground
The last time England and South Africa played an ODI at Lord’s was back in 2017 during the third match of that series. Eight long years have passed and now both teams return to this historic venue once again.
ENG vs SA – Can England finally taste victory after thirteen years
England’s last ODI win over South Africa at Lord’s was in 2012, making it thirteen years since that success. None of those players remain and the current squad is in transition with a new style and strategy. The biggest change is twenty-six-year-old Harry Brook as captain. He has led in eight ODIs, losing 2-3 to Australia but bouncing back with a 3-0 sweep of West Indies. Under Brook, the team has averaged 73.83 with the bat, the best ever for an England ODI skipper. Even though England are still adapting, I would still give them a fifty percent chance of winning.

ENG vs SA – With Rabada ruled out, can Maharaj repeat the heroics from eight years ago
South Africa last won at Lord’s eight years ago. The team has changed a lot since then but two of the heroes from that win, Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada, are still around. Unfortunately Rabada is injured and will miss this match, which means Maharaj must take the responsibility alone. In the match on September 2 he was outstanding, picking up four wickets while keeping his economy rate at 4.00. He broke England’s middle and lower order, restricting them to under four runs per batter, and even sent Sonny Baker back for a golden duck. If Maharaj can carry that form into this game, South Africa’s chances of clinching the series will be very strong.

ENG vs SA – Conclusion
Looking at the overall stability of both sides, South Africa appear to be the more settled unit. That is why I feel they have a higher probability of winning this ODI series. Harry Brook may already be shaping up as England’s most promising ODI captain, but the development of the rest of the squad will take time. On the other hand, South Africa’s inspirational leader Temba Bavuma has returned from injury and gives his side the edge in terms of balance and confidence.
ENG vs SA 2025 2nd ODI – Venue History&Analysis: Headingley Cricket Ground
Stadium Capacity: Around 31,100 spectators
Stadium Address: Lord’s Cricket Ground, St John’s Wood, London, United Kingdom
About the Stadium:
Lord’s Cricket Ground is one of the oldest and most iconic cricket venues in the world. It was first established in 1787 and after two relocations has been at its present site since 1814, giving it a history of more than two centuries. This ground is also the home of the Marylebone Cricket Club, and the MCC Museum houses some of the most treasured cricket artefacts. Because of this heritage, Lord’s is universally known as the Home of Cricket. The MCC continues to play a decisive role, as it has framed and maintained the official Laws of Cricket up to the present day, with the most recent changes in 2017 also being issued by MCC.

As the ground recognised worldwide as the Home of Cricket, Lord’s has been the stage for countless international matches including Tests and ODIs. It also continues to host the prestigious traditional fixtures between Eton and Harrow as well as Oxford and Cambridge every year, keeping alive a long-standing legacy. Looking ahead, the historic first Women’s Test at Lord’s is scheduled for 2026, which will be a landmark moment in the journey of women’s cricket and will once again underline the special place of Lord’s Cricket Ground in the history of the game.
