How Afghanistan Dominated Zimbabwe to Win by 232 Runs
Afghanistan delivered a dominant performance in Harare, crushing Zimbabwe by 232 runs. After being put into bat, Afghanistan posted a formidable total of 286 for 6, thanks to brilliant innings from debutant Sediqullah Atal who scored 104 and Abdul Malik who made 84. In reply, Zimbabwe’s chase collapsed spectacularly as they were bowled out for just 54 runs. The first match clearly exposed Zimbabwe’s weaknesses, so how did they end up in this situation? Let’s take a closer look.

ZIM vs AFG 2024 2nd ODI – Zimbabwe’s Batting Collapse and Strategy Issues
As I mentioned earlier, Zimbabwe really struggled with their batting lineup. The top order kept collapsing due to weak batting, and they didn’t change their strategy by promoting Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza to the top order. It seemed more like both Williams and Raza were trying to survive rather than aiming for a win. With only 17.5 overs bowled, the match was practically over.

Atal-Malik Stand and Fierce Bowling Seal Massive Win in Harare
Compared to Zimbabwe’s strategy, Afghanistan got off to a strong start with the partnership between Sediqullah Atal and Abdul Malik. They clearly adapted better to the Harare pitch, which offers slower bounce and less lateral movement. They waited patiently for the ball and avoided playing rash drives early on, allowing them to keep scoring effortlessly. Since the Zimbabwean bowlers failed to take early wickets, the duo grew in confidence and converted their starts into big scores, putting together an opening partnership of over 180 runs.

The seamers also performed exceptionally well. Farooqi immediately applied pressure on Zimbabwe’s top order. Ghazanfar took the important wicket of Raza, who was Zimbabwe’s biggest hope. Naveed Zadran then took wickets in quick succession right after Farooqi’s breakthroughs, leaving Zimbabwe with no chance to rebuild their innings. Let me now combine their stats for a clearer picture.
Afghanistan’s Seamers Combined Match Total
| Bowler | O | W | R | Econ |
| Farooqi | 6 | 2 | 15 | 2.5 |
| Zadran | 3 | 3 | 13 | 4.33 |
| Ghazanfar | 3.5 | 3 | 9 | 2.57 |
| Total | 12.5 | 8 | 37 | 2.96 |

Will Zimbabwe Beat Afghanistan in Next ODI?
As visitors, Afghanistan have shown great adaptability. They are strong both with the bat and ball. However, the Zimbabwe side mainly depends on their senior players, which indicates some structural issues. The younger players lack experience, and financial as well as administrative instability has affected their preparation. Looking at the ODI results over the past three years, Zimbabwe has struggled to secure wins against Afghanistan. Although I do not anticipate a significant victory for Zimbabwe, all eyes now turn to the next match. Can Zimbabwe regroup and spring a surprise, or will Afghanistan continue their dominance?

ZIM vs AFG 2024 2nd ODI – Venue History&Analysis: Harare Sports Club
Stadium Capacity: Around 10,000 spectators.
Stadium Address: Cnr. Josiah Tongogara Avenue and Fifth Street, Harare, Zimbabwe.
About the Stadium:
The pitch at Harare Sports Club is known for its balance, offering assistance to both batsmen and bowlers. The square boundaries are around 60 to 65 meters, which encourages higher scoring rates and more sixes. However, spinners in particular have to be precise with their length to avoid being hit over the ropes. Harare is at an altitude of about 1500 meters. For bowlers, at higher altitudes the air density is lower, so the ball encounters less air resistance and travels faster. Furthermore, the ball tends to carry quicker off the pitch, which can benefit fast bowlers who rely on pace.

For batters, shots that would normally land inside the rope at sea level can clear the boundary here. This is why you often see more sixes at high‑altitude venues such as Johannesburg. The ball comes on a bit quicker, which makes timing easier, but mistimed shots can also travel further and increase the risk of catches in the deep. At this altitude, players may experience quicker fatigue because of the thinner air and lower oxygen levels. Batters are often seen taking more breaks between overs in Harare compared to sea‑level venues.
