IND vs AUS 2024 3rd Test – Rain Forces Draw in Brisbane as India Shows Grit Against Australia
Rain, rain, rain. It started with rain and ended with rain. The Test ended in a draw on Day 5 due to persistent rain in Brisbane. India lost their final wicket early in the day but came back strongly, picking up seven Australian wickets and forcing the hosts to declare at 89. Chasing a target of 275, India reached 8 for no loss before rain returned and brought play to a close. Despite the interruptions, we saw the rising spirit of Team India and how the Aussies, after holding a big lead, eventually collapsed.

Travis Head and Steve Smith Lead Australia with Back-to-Back Centuries, Shift Momentum Against India
Travis Head’s 140 in Adelaide did not satisfy him; he was eager for more. He quickly changed the momentum, reaching his half-century off just 71 balls and going on to score an impressive 152 runs from 157 balls. This was his second consecutive century in the series.

Steve Smith, finally returning to form after a drought of 26 innings without a century since the 2023 Ashes, scored 101. Together, they helped Australia cross the 300-run mark with a commanding partnership. Their stability and change in pace put India on the back foot.

Australia’s Second Innings Collapse as Bumrah Dominates
However, the Aussies could not carry through in the second innings. Maybe it was due to the weather, or maybe they thought India would be easy to handle. But what followed was just a line-up of batters getting out to bowling that was good, not extraordinary. The start was flat and lacked intent, and by the time five wickets had fallen, it was almost embarrassing. It was only when Travis Head and Pat Cummins came to the crease that it felt like they were staging a fightback. By then, Bumrah already had nine wickets in his hand.

With so much play lost due to rain, Pat Cummins made a bold declaration, hoping to bowl India out in just 54 overs. Ironically, even though Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood had to come out to bat, they could not add much to the score as Bumrah and Siraj were bowling brilliantly. This declaration gave the impression that they only wanted to take control and put an end to the bad mood after the collapse, hoping that India would not be able to recover. But then the weather had other plans, as rain returned just two overs into India’s innings and the match was eventually called off.

IND vs AUS 2024 3rd Test – India Show Resilience in Rain-Hit Brisbane Test
In a country where many regions receive heavy monsoon rainfall, Team India is quite used to conditions like those in Brisbane. They finally played to their true potential. KL Rahul was the top scorer with 84 runs, anchoring the innings with solid technique. Ravindra Jadeja also played a crucial knock of 77 runs, bringing stability and momentum in the middle order. Even though a few early wickets fell, India showed good fight with important contributions from the middle and lower order. This shows better stability and resilience compared to the previous match.

Jasprit Bumrah Nearly Secures 10-Wicket Haul as He Dismantles Australia’s Top Order
Jasprit Bumrah finished with 9 wickets in the match and it was almost a 10-wicket haul. It is a bit unfortunate that he could not complete it because Pat Cummins declared the innings. In the first innings, when the Australians were looking strong with the bat, Bumrah picked up key wickets like Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. Then in the second innings, he got rid of Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Marsh. He broke the backbone of Australia’s top order and had them struggling at 33 for 5. If he continues to bowl like this, we can surely expect another brilliant spell from him in the next Test.

IND vs AUS 2024 3rd Test – The match ended in a draw, but India dominated the final day
Australia really fought well, but this collapse would not have done the batter any good, and another low score only increases the pressure. It has certainly given a boost to the Indian bowlers who took those wickets. We all know how Indian batters improve with time, and with Bumrah, the monster, finally waking up, things look very promising. The series remains tied at 1-1, setting up an exciting Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

IND vs AUS 2024 3rd Test – Venue History&Analysis: The Brisbane Cricket Ground
Stadium Capacity: Around 36,000 spectators.
Stadium Address: Vulture Street, Woolloongabba QLD 4102, Australia.
About the Stadium:
The site was originally a swamp, then used for grazing cattle before being developed into a sports ground. Long before European settlement, the land belonged to the Turrbal people, the traditional custodians of the Brisbane area. The Gabba, as a short name of Brisbane Cricket Ground, was established in 1895. The Gabba hosted its first Test cricket match in 1931 between Australia and South Africa. Due to rain and poor light, the match ended in a draw, similar to the result of the 3rd Test between India and Australia in 2024.

The Gabba pitch is known for being lively and challenging. It offers good pace and bounce, making it favourable for fast bowlers who can generate extra speed and lift off the surface. However, the weather in Brisbane is quite unpredictable, with sudden showers often disrupting play. Rain, followed by overcast conditions, tends to soften the pitch, slightly reducing its bounce and pace. On such damp surfaces, seam bowlers are able to extract more movement, even if the overall pace is a bit lower. Due to these factors, teams need to remain flexible with their tactics and timing.
