Sri Lanka turned up the heat and made Bangladesh sweat in a sizzling seven-wicket win! Chasing 155, Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka brought the fireworks early. Nissanka smashed 42 off just 16 balls, and Kusal’s classy 73 kept things smooth. The duo went wild in the powerplay, stacking 78 runs in just five overs! There was even a moment of magic with six consecutive boundaries between them. Nissanka launching and Kusal finishing with style. Pure entertainment!

But credit where it’s due, the bowlers set the stage. Dasun Shanaka and Jeffrey Vandersay kept things tight, and Maheesh Theekshana picked up a couple of wickets too. Bangladesh just didn’t push hard enough in the middle at one point crawling through 60 balls for only 65 runs. Parvez Emon and Shamim Hossain tried to spark something, but it was too little, too late. Sri Lanka, calm and collected, sealed the win with an over to spare.
An emphatic win for Sri Lanka to get going in the T20I series against Bangladesh 💪#SLvBAN 📝: https://t.co/hv0IiFqlGU pic.twitter.com/ZyXJEGU6o0

SL vs BAN 2025 1st T20I: Bangladesh Has a Snowball’s Chance in Hell
It may sound a bit harsh or exaggerated, but the reality is that Bangladesh face an uphill task if they are to win this one. Some fans might not agree, arguing that there’s still time before the match and the team could bounce back. But at the end of the day, numbers don’t lie – and right now, the odds are heavily stacked against them.
SL vs BAN – Ground Conditions Matter, But Not Everything
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will kick off their T20 series on July 10 at Pallekele. Playing under the July evening conditions here means high humidity early on, and heavy dew later in the match. This gives some edge to the chasing side – dew makes fielding tough, the ball gets slippery, and bowlers struggle to grip. But early on, the batting side still has to survive the fast bowler with swing-friendly conditions. So it’s not an easy ride either way.
SL vs BAN – History Strongly Favours Sri Lanka
That said, stats tell a different story. At Pallekele, teams batting second have won just 40.9% of T20Is. And when it comes to SL vs BAN, the numbers are even more one-sided: Bangladesh have only beaten Sri Lanka 5 times in their last 30 T20Is – that’s a 16.7% win rate. Even worse, they’ve never won a T20I against Sri Lanka at Pallekele. Plus, their recent form is shaky — only 2 wins in their last 5 games. Sri Lanka? 4 wins out of 5. The momentum is clearly with the hosts.
SL vs BAN – Injuries and Squad Depth
Bangladesh are also battling injuries and limited squad depth. Taskin Ahmed is nursing a shoulder issue, Litton Das suffered a muscle pull, and Shakib just returned to the squad. Even if they all play, their match fitness is a concern. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have a couple of injury concerns too – Hasaranga and Chameera – but they’ve managed well, thanks to solid bench strength.
SL vs BAN – Prediction
All things considered – form, fitness, venue, and head-to-head record – Bangladesh will need something special to pull off a win here. Sri Lanka are in good shape and playing at home, so they go in as clear favourites.

SL vs BAN 2025 1st T20I: Dew, Pressure, and the Big Question – Who Will Shine Bright?
Sri Lanka’s Key Players to Watch
- Wanindu Hasaranga – Sri Lanka’s key weapon at Pallekele. With 58 T20I wickets at 14.6 and a career economy of 6.7, his variations—especially the googly—remain effective even with dew. As captain, his tactical awareness in wet conditions adds further value.
- Dushmantha Chameera – Crucial in the powerplay with his 145+ kph pace and swing under humid conditions. Holds a T20I average of 23.5 and was lethal with 4/17 vs Bangladesh in 2024. His death-over yorkers can restrict the opposition if fit.
- Maheesh Theekshana – Controls the middle overs with a mix of carrom balls and off-spin. His T20I average (20.1) and economy (6.3) speak to his consistency, even under dew. He builds pressure that leads to wickets at the other end.
- Charith Asalanka – A dependable middle-order anchor. Has a T20I strike rate of 132 vs BAN and averages 45 against their spinners. His 48 in 2024* showed he can chase or stabilize as needed, giving SL crucial balance.

Bangladesh’s Key Players to Watch
- Shakib Al Hasan – Still BAN’s most valuable asset. His 238 T20I wickets and 2,500+ runs offer all-round impact. His 66 vs SL in 2023* showed he remains a match-winner, especially before dew sets in.
- Mustafizur Rahman – Dew-friendly bowler with effective cutters and slower balls. With a T20I economy of 7.4, he thrives at the death. His 3/17 at Pallekele shows he knows how to bowl here.
- Taskin Ahmed – If fit, his bounce and movement (T20I avg 23.9) could trouble SL’s top order. His height helps extract extra bounce at Pallekele, making him key for early breakthroughs.
- Litton Das – A fast start from Das is crucial. Despite averaging 19.2 in his last 5 vs SL, his career strike rate of 130+ makes him a threat in the powerplay if he finds form.

SL vs BAN 2025 1st T20I – Venue History&Analysis: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium
Stadium Capacity: Approximately 35,000 spectators
Stadium Address: Kandy-Mahiyangane-Padiyatalawa Hwy, Pallekele, Sri Lanka
Stadium History: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium is a new venue built in Sri Lanka in 2010, and it is one of the most modern stadiums in the country. The main purpose of its construction was to alleviate the pressure and reliance on the R. Premadasa Stadium. After its completion in 2010, the stadium began hosting international matches later that year. Today, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium has become a significant cricket venue in Sri Lanka and is also one of the well-known international stadiums. It has hosted major events like the Cricket World Cup and ICC World T20, and currently regularly hosts the Lanka Premier League (LPL) and bilateral series.
Stadium Features: Pallekele is located at an altitude of around 500 meters, offering a cool climate ideal for hosting matches. The only exception is the period from May to September when afternoon thunderstorms may disrupt games. The upcoming T20I will take place after an ODI series in July, which tends to have higher humidity. However, since T20Is are mainly played at night, the impact on the game is more likely to be seen in the difference between the batting and bowling team’s advantages.
Stadium Advantage Analysis: As mentioned earlier, during T20 matches at night in Pallekele, the advantage or disadvantage primarily depends on whether a team is batting first or second. This match will start at 7 PM, and at that time, the humidity will still be quite high, meaning the team batting first will face the challenge of fast bowlers in these conditions.
For the team batting second, although the humidity levels will be lower and dew will begin to form, the presence of dew can cause unpredictable ball movement. This puts the fielding team at a disadvantage, as the wet ball not only makes it difficult to field but also affects the ability to judge the ball’s bounce and roll. Additionally, the wet outfield will make it harder for fielders to move quickly, affecting their ability to chase the ball.
In theory, the team batting second in Pallekele at night has an advantage. However, interestingly, historical records at Pallekele show that the team batting second has a winning percentage of only 40.9%, which is lower than the 53.8% winning rate for the team batting first.
