SL vs ZIM 2025 2nd ODI Match Result
Updated:Sri Lanka beat Zimbabwe by 5 wickets.

Sri Lanka pulled off a smooth(ish) chase in Harare to seal the series 2-0, knocking off Zimbabwe’s 277 with just three balls and five wickets to spare. Pathum Nissanka was the calm in the chaos, cruising to a classy 122 while the rest chipped in around him. Charith Asalanka added a feisty 71, and though Sri Lanka made things a little spicy towards the end, going boundary-less for a stretch in the final overs, they held their nerve. Kamindu Mendis finished it off with a cheeky inside edge that somehow found the rope. Classic cricket drama!

Earlier, Zimbabwe looked promising with Ben Curran’s solid 79 and Sikandar Raza’s unbeaten 59 giving their total some late muscle. But a sluggish middle phase and timely wickets by Dushmantha Chameera (3 for 52) slowed the momentum. Sri Lanka’s bowlers tightened the screws, and their deep batting line-up made sure the chase never got out of hand. A few “what ifs” for Zimbabwe, especially that dropped catch when Nissanka was on 78, but in the end, Sri Lanka were just too steady under pressure.

SL vs ZIM 2025 2nd ODI – Can Zimbabwe Find Hope in the Numbers?
Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe have played five ODIs at Harare Sports Club, with Sri Lanka winning all five. However, those matches were played 17 years ago. While Zimbabwe are still not among the top-ranked teams, can they manage to grab one win and end the drought?
SL vs ZIM – Sri Lanka’s Stats and On-Field Reality
As mentioned earlier, Sri Lanka’s recent five-match averages show a team score of around 251 with a strike rate of only 69.93. A closer look at individual batting performances reveals that this is more about the team’s style than a lack of ability. Sri Lanka’s approach in ODIs is generally conservative, focusing on preserving early wickets before accelerating in the middle and final stages. The recent numbers reflect this pattern, with Powerplay starts being modest and opening batsmen rarely crossing a combined fifty. Most of the scoring has come from the middle order, especially Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka. Asalanka has been in outstanding touch, registering two half-centuries and two centuries in the last five games.

SL vs ZIM – Do the Similar Stats Give Zimbabwe a Chance?
Zimbabwe’s last five-match stats show that apart from the average score, their strike rate and bowling economy are not far behind Sri Lanka’s. This might offer hope for a historic win at Harare Sports Club, but I feel the chances are slim. Leaving bowling aside, the batting data tells a bigger story. Sri Lanka tend to start slow and finish strong, while Zimbabwe follow a traditional pattern of attacking in the Powerplay before the middle order continues. If the openers fail, they rarely recover. Recent games prove this, as results have hinged on Brian Bennett and Ben Curran, whose performances decided outcomes against both Ireland and Afghanistan.

SL vs ZIM – Conclusion
Numbers can show trends, but they do not always reveal the full story. Sri Lanka’s five-match average strike rate of 69.93 might look modest, but that is a result of their cautious starts. The middle order, especially positions three to six, have maintained an average strike rate of 85.09, which explains why the team remains highly competitive despite the lower overall SR.

SL vs ZIM 2025 2nd ODI – Venue History&Analysis: Harare Sports Club, Harare
Stadium Capacity: Around 10,000 spectators
Stadium Address: Harare Sports Club, Fifth Street Extension, Harare, Zimbabwe
About the Stadium:
Established in 1900, the Harare Sports Club had to wait until 1992 to host its first ever One-Day International. Since then, in just thirty-three years, it has staged an impressive 203 ODIs, making it one of the more frequently used international cricket venues. Here is an interesting piece of trivia for the fans – both the highest and the lowest ODI team totals at this ground have come from Zimbabwe. The highest was set in the 2023 CWC Qualifier against the United States, when Sean Williams played a breathtaking knock of 174 off only 101 balls, peppering the boundary with twenty-one fours and clearing it five times. Not surprisingly, he walked away with the Player of the Match award.

The lowest total was recorded twenty-one years earlier in April 2004, against none other than Sri Lanka, who are also the opponents for the current match. On that day, Zimbabwe were bundled out for a mere 35 runs, with no batsman reaching double figures. Four players were dismissed without scoring, and amusingly, those ducks came on the first, second, third and fourth ball faced by them. This meant the innings featured both a golden duck and a silver duck, and to make matters more embarrassing, the golden duck belonged to none other than the then captain, Tatenda Taibu.
