Sri Lanka kicked off the ODI series with a bang, grabbing a 77-run win over Bangladesh in Colombo. Charith Asalanka led from the front with a gritty century, anchoring Sri Lanka to 244 after an early wobble at 29 for 3. Taskin Ahmed, back from injury, looked sharp with 4 wickets, but the real fireworks came later. Bangladesh had a solid start, cruising at 100 for 1, and then, poof! A legendary collapse.

In just 20 balls, they plummeted to 105 for 8. That’s not a typo. Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis went full wizard mode, spinning webs that left the batters clueless. Kamindu’s ambidextrous bowling? Straight-up magic. And credit to the fielders too — some brilliant catches and a direct hit helped dismantle the chase. Jaker Ali’s late 51 gave Bangladesh something to smile about, but the damage was done. Sri Lanka go 1-0 up, and trust us, this one’s going on the ODI meltdown highlight reel.

SL vs BAN 2025 1st ODI: Can Bangladesh pull off another 2021-style miracle?
This is the ODI leg of the Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh series, kicking off from 2nd July, with a total of three matches lined up. The opening match will be played at one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic grounds – the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.
Now, when it comes to ODIs at this venue, the head-to-head is a bit more interesting than in Tests. These two sides have played seven ODIs here, and while Sri Lanka has the upper hand with six wins, Bangladesh did pull off a memorable win in 2021, chasing down 246 and scripting a historic moment in their cricketing journey. That win may be just one, but for Bangladesh, it was truly one for the history books!
The last time these teams faced off here was in 2023, and Sri Lanka came out on top again. But still, with the kind of improvement Bangladesh has shown lately, fans can surely look forward to a good fight. Who knows, this could be another special chapter for Bangladesh cricket!

SL vs BAN 2025 1st ODI Key Players to Watch
Sri Lanka’s Key Players to Watch
- Pathum Nissanka – Nissanka is a technically sound batter who thrives on slow pitches like Premadasa. His ability to rotate strike and play spin well makes him crucial in setting a strong foundation. Since the pitch can be tricky early on, his patience and ability to accelerate later will be key for Sri Lanka’s total.
- Wanindu Hasaranga – Hasaranga is a match-winner with both bat and ball. Premadasa’s turning track suits his sharp leg-spin, and his aggressive lower-order hitting can change the game. Against Bangladesh’s spin-heavy lineup, his bowling in the middle overs will be vital.
- Maheesh Theekshana – Theekshana’s mystery spin is tough to read, especially on a pitch that grips. His tight lines and ability to take wickets in the middle overs can strangle Bangladesh’s scoring. He’s also great at bowling in the death overs.
- Charith Asalanka – Asalanka is a reliable player against spin, which will be crucial against Bangladesh’s spinners. His ability to anchor the innings and play aggressive shots when needed makes him a key player in stabilizing or accelerating Sri Lanka’s innings.

Bangladesh’s Key Players to Watch
- Litton Das – Litton is Bangladesh’s most consistent ODI batter. His aggressive start can put pressure on Sri Lanka’s bowlers, and his experience playing spin will be crucial on this pitch. If he gets going, Bangladesh can post a big total.
- Shakib Al Hasan – Shakib is a legend, and his left-arm spin is always dangerous on turning tracks. He can control the middle overs and chip in with crucial runs. His experience in Sri Lankan conditions makes him a big threat.
- Taskin Ahmed – Even on slow pitches, Taskin’s pace and bounce can trouble batters early on. If he gets early wickets, Sri Lanka’s middle order will be under pressure. His death bowling is also improving.
- Towhid Hridoy – Hridoy is a rising star who plays spin really well. His ability to rotate strike and hit boundaries in the middle overs will be key in building Bangladesh’s innings. He could be the anchor if the top order fails.
