England kicked off their T20 summer with a bang as Jos Buttler lit up Chester-le-Street with a sensational 96 from 59 balls. Back in the mix without the captaincy burden, he played with a mix of class and calm, dragging England to a strong 188 for 6. The powerplay was pure fireworks—England racked up 78 runs in the first six overs, thanks to Buttler’s shot-making masterclass and Jamie Smith’s fearless opening salvo. West Indies’ bowlers never really recovered from that early hammering.

Chasing 189, the Windies never looked settled. Liam Dawson, making his first England appearance in over two years, bowled like he’d never left—grabbing 4 for 20 and stifling any hopes of a comeback. Evin Lewis tried to light a spark with a big over off Jacob Bethell, but Dawson’s tight lines and smart variations shut the door. By the time Rovman Powell was clean bowled, it was game over. England took the win by 21 runs, and Dawson, nervy on return or not, walked away with Player of the Match and a massive grin.

ENG vs WI 2025 1st T20I: Can the Windies finally break the Riverside curse against England?
This is the first match of the T20I series between West Indies and England after 2023. Both teams have faced each other seven times in T20Is, with three of those matches happening right here at Riverside Ground itself. The stats show England winning twice and West Indies winning once. Though both teams are almost same-same in T20I overall performance, but West Indies’ last victory against England at Riverside Ground was way back in 2007 only. Even in 2020’s match at this ground, England took the trophy. Now after full four years, West Indies are again ready to fight with England. Can they finally break the jinx and win at Riverside Ground? Let’s see!

England’s Key Players to Watch
- Jos Buttler – The captain’s explosive batting sets the tone. Riverside’s swing-friendly start won’t faze him, and his ability to adapt between anchor and aggressor is crucial, especially with Brook absent.
- Phil Salt – A fearless Powerplay hitter. The pitch’s bounce suits his attacking style, and with Brook out, his quick starts are vital to offset early wickets.
- Adil Rashid – Riverside’s grip aids his variations. WI’s batters often struggle vs leg-spin, making his middle-over control a game-changer.
- Jofra Archer – His pace and bounce trouble WI’s power-hitters. If fit, his death bowling (yorkers/slower balls) could decide tight moments.

West Indies’s Key Players to Watch
- Nicholas Pooran (wk) – A spin-wrecker. His ability to smash Rashid/Livingstone over Riverside’s short boundaries makes him the middle-order X-factor.
- Rovman Powell (c) – The finisher. As the pitch slows, his brute strength against pace (Archer/Jordan) in the death overs could swing the match.
- Akeal Hosein – His left-arm spin thrives against England’s right-hand-heavy lineup. Riverside’s tacky surface helps him restrict runs.
- Alzarri Joseph – Raw pace and steep bounce. Early wickets against England’s openers could derail their innings.

ENG vs WI 2025 1st T20I – Venue: Riverside Ground
Stadium Capacity: Approximately 17,000 spectators
Stadium Address: Riverside, Chester-le-Street DH3 3QR, United Kingdom
Stadium Features: Riverside Ground, located in Yorkshire, England, is a historic cricket ground. Although it may not have the same historical significance as other cricket grounds and isn’t as large as some of the more famous venues, its evolution has been a witness to part of England’s cricket history. Riverside Ground was originally established in the late 1880s and served as the primary ground for Harrogate Cricket Club. It wasn’t until 1991 that the ground underwent a significant expansion after Durham was granted permission by the ECB to join the first division of County Championship. The first international match held at Riverside Ground was during the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup, where England faced the West Indies. Of course, to accommodate this international event, Riverside Ground underwent another round of upgrades. Since then, the ground has gradually entered the international cricket scene and is now one of the key venues for international matches in England.
