NZ vs ENG 2025 1sr ODI – Match Result

Updated:New Zealand beat England by 4 wickets.

EnglandNew Zealand
223 (35.2)224/6 (36.4)

What a rollercoaster at Bay Oval! England’s top order completely imploded, with Foulkes turning the first few overs into a personal demolition derby. Root, Duckett, Bethell, and Smith all back in the pavilion before anyone had really settled. Enter Harry Brook, though, because someone had to try and rescue this sinking ship. And rescue he did! The England captain-in-waiting smacked a brilliant 135 off just 101 balls, hitting boundaries left, right, and center, nearly keeping the visitors in the game all by himself. Jamie Overton chipped in with a solid 46, but honestly, it was Brook’s show from start to finish, a true one-man highlight reel.

New Zealand, however, had too much firepower to let a solo act steal the show. Daryl Mitchell and Michael Bracewell steadied the ship after early hiccups, combining for a gutsy 92-run partnership that swung the momentum firmly back to the home side. Mitchell’s 78 and Bracewell’s 51 proved more than enough as New Zealand cruised past 223 with four wickets in hand and plenty of overs to spare. Between Foulkes’ sensational opening spell and the calm efficiency of Mitchell and Bracewell, the Kiwis made sure that, despite Brook’s heroics, the win was always going to be theirs.

NZ vs ENG 2025 1st ODI – Huge Difference Than T20I Ranking

Just two days after finishing their T20I series, New Zealand and England meet again for a three-match ODI battle, each game played on a different ground. While the T20 contests were close because of their similar rankings, the ODI story looks very different. New Zealand currently hold the No. 2 spot in the world, while England have slipped to eighth. England’s golden era in ODIs feels long gone, with retirements and form drops disrupting stability. In contrast, New Zealand’s consistent structure keeps them only behind India, maintaining their identity as one of the most complete ODI sides today.

We can see in recent years, when playing against New Zealand, England still has a better record.

NZ vs ENG – What Happened in Last Meetings

Looking at recent history, England still hold the upper hand. During the 2023 New Zealand tour of England, the hosts dominated the series 3-1, winning the last three games in a row. Liam Livingstone’s 95 and David Willey’s 3-for in the second ODI set the tone, Ben Stokes’ stunning 182 in the third destroyed the Kiwis’ bowling, and Dawid Malan’s 127 in the fourth sealed the deal. It looked like England’s batting depth was unbeatable back then. However, none of those key performers are part of this current tour. That raises a serious question, who will step up to carry the batting and bowling load this time?

NZ vs ENG – Key Player’s Return

New Zealand’s biggest boost comes from returning stars. Rachin Ravindra, who suffered a facial injury during fielding practice earlier this year, is back in the side. His three-wicket haul in their only win of the 2023 series showed his value, and the team will hope for a strong and safe comeback on the same Bay Oval ground where he was hurt. Captain Mitchell Santner and top-order anchor Kane Williamson also make their returns after recovering from medical setbacks. The only concern is pacer Ben Sears, who misses the series due to a hamstring injury, a point to weakening New Zealand’s pace attack.

NZ vs ENG – Can England Redo it?

England’s chances to repeat their 2023 success are uncertain. Bay Oval is a batting-friendly surface that rewards clean hitting, but the current lineup lacks the heavy scorers of the past. Ben Duckett’s experience and Jacob Bethell’s youthful flair must combine to rebuild England’s run power. Jofra Archer’s pace could be effective early on, but New Zealand hold both form and home advantage. Fresh off a strong run against Pakistan, the Black Caps appear confident and ready. If their returning core finds rhythm quickly, England may face a long day under the Mount Maunganui sun.

NZ vs ENG 2025 1st ODI – Venue History&Analysis: Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui

Stadium Capacity: Around 10,000 spectators

Stadium Address: 48 Totara Street, Mount Maunganui, Tauranga, New Zealand.

About the Stadium:

Located in the coastal town of Mount Maunganui, Bay Oval is one of New Zealand’s youngest yet most picturesque international cricket venues. Officially opened in 2007 and hosting its first international match in 2014, it has quickly grown into a favorite for both domestic and international fixtures. The stadium’s grassy embankments and backdrop of Mount Maunganui create a relaxed summer atmosphere that captures the essence of New Zealand cricket. Fans often enjoy picnic-style viewing, making it a venue that combines comfort, charm, and excitement in equal measure.

The surface at Bay Oval is known for being batting-friendly, producing even bounce and rewarding clean stroke play. Seamers can find some movement early due to the coastal breeze, but as the game progresses, batting becomes smoother and run-scoring accelerates. Spinners usually have limited grip, relying on pace variation and accuracy to stay effective. In white-ball cricket, chasing is often preferred because dew in the evening reduces control for bowlers. These conditions make Bay Oval a consistent host for high-scoring and entertaining contests.
