Known as Ceylon at the time, Sri Lanka played its inaugural first-class match against the Marylebone Cricket Club at the Nomads Ground in Victoria Park, Colombo during the 1926-27 season, suffering a defeat by an innings. Initially, first-class cricket in Sri Lanka was limited to matches against touring teams, particularly from England and Australia, who often stopped over in Ceylon en route to each other’s countries. On July 21, 1981, Sri Lanka Test cricket team was granted full membership by the ICC and achieved Test cricket status, becoming the eighth nation to do so. Their first Test match took place on February 17, 1982, against England at Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu Stadium in Colombo, with Bandula Warnapura as the captain.
