Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer, the second-most expensive player in the IPL 2025 auction, has been named the Punjab Kings captain 2025. The announcement was made by Iyer along with his teammates Yuzvendra Chahal and Shashank Singh, during an appearance on the reality TV show Bigg Boss.
Appointed 2025 PBKS Captain
The 30-year-old Punjab Kings new captain is one of eight captains who won the IPL. He led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) from 2022 to 2024 and achieved this feat in his last stint for KKR. The 2025 PBKS captain was purchased by Kings, who had the largest budget in the IPL 2025 mega auction for INR 26.75 crore (about USD 3.18 million), surpassing the price of Delhi Capitals (DC), another team searching for a captain. “I am honoured that the team has reposed its faith in me. I am looking forward to working again with coach Ricky Ponting,” the 2025 PBKS captain quoted.

Iyer’s Captain Career in IPL
Shreyas Iyer will now add a 3rd IPL team to his list as a captain after making his debut in 2015：DC, KKR, and now PBKS.
DC
Iyer was named captain by DC midway through the 2018 Indian Premier League, and the team advanced to the playoffs the following three seasons, finishing second in 2020. With 345 runs, plus a century, in nine innings at a strike rate of 188.52 and an average of over 49, he finished fourth among the tournament’s top run scorers and guided Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this season. Shreyas Iyer first became captain of the Delhi Capitals back in 2020 where he led his side to the IPL finals, which they lost to the mighty Mumbai Indians (MI).
KKR
After DC he was appointed captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders. His first season was bittersweet as the KKR team did not make the playoffs. However, Iyer bounced back in the following year. Shreyas Iyer and his KKR side won the 2024 IPL competition. And now, he is Punjab Kings new captain.

Ponting claimed that PBKS’s intense bidding for Iyer at the auction was an outcome of the duo’s collaboration at DC.
