When the squad for India’s tour of England was announced, people were irked to see Rishabh Pant’s name on the list. Well, after an abysmal IPL season, what would you expect? But boy, did Pant prove them all wrong! He didn’t just make runs, but hundreds in both innings of a Test match in England. Let that sink in first! Not only this, Rishabh Pant’s Test record recorded many more feats like the most runs by an Indian wicketkeeper in Test. And there are many more. That’s quite some way to silence your detractors!

A Quick Rundown of Day 4 of ENG vs IND 1st Test
Day 4 started from where Team India had left their batting on Day 3. At 90/2, captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul came out to bat, but little did anyone know that the captain would depart in just the second over of the day. But then came out Rishabh Pant and became a beacon of hope for the Indian team and fans alike.

Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul combined to form a 195-run partnership that got on the nerves of the English bowlers. KL Rahul was as calm and composed as ever, but the most surprising thing was Pant’s restraint. Pant championed both grace and madness in just one innings! He varied his pace whenever he liked, and the English bowlers were not at all happy with this. But no matter what they tried, he still became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score hundreds in both innings of a Test match in England. His sublime 118 off 140 balls helped him to get the most runs by an Indian wicketkeeper in Test.

His century, along with KL Rahul’s disciplined 137 off 247 balls, got India to a safe place. But Pant’s wicket opened the floodgates for the English bowlers to cause mayhem in the lower middle. They all pounced on a helpless India like a pack of wolves, and just like that, India’s second innings was reduced to just 364/10. Then England came to bat, and before stumps, they accumulated 21 runs for no loss.
Rishabh Pant’s Test Record List of Day 4

1. Seventh Indian to Score a Twin Ton in One Test Match
The most talked-about point of the entire ENG vs IND 1st Test is Pant’s heroic hundreds in both innings of a Test match in England. However, he is only the seventh Indian to do so. Notably, Sunil Gavaskar has achieved this feat thrice, Rahul Dravid twice, and Vijay Hazare, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane have also done this once in their career. He’s simply the first Indian to do so in England.

2. Joined Andy Flower in an Elite List
Pant became only the second wicketkeeper in 148 years of Test history to reach two hundreds in the same match, after Zimbabwe’s Andy Flower, and he also scored his fourth Test century in England. Andy Flower was the only wicketkeeper-batter to reach two hundreds in a single Test match, hitting 142 and 199 not out against South Africa in Harare in 2001. He also accomplished this incredible achievement, making him the first Indian wicketkeeper to do so.

3. Equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s Record
With his second century of the game, Rishabh Pant tied the record of four Test hundreds in England held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and Dilip Vengsarkar. He is now only surpassed by Rahul Dravid, who has six.

4. Edged Past MS Dhoni
This might be the one Rishabh Pant’s Test record that even MS Dhoni would be proud of. He surpassed his mentor, Dhoni, in terms of Test centuries with his 7th ton, and he did so in just 44 Tests. On the other hand, Dhoni took 90 Tests for his six centuries in the format. Not only Dhoni, but he also left behind legends like Kumar Sangakkara, AB de Villiers, BJ Watling, and Matt Prior – all of whom had six Test tons as wicket-keepers.

5. Highest Match Aggregate by an Asian Wicketkeeper in Test Cricket
On Day 4, Pant shattered and made many records, including the record for the most runs by an Indian wicketkeeper in Test. Additionally, he shattered the record held by Asian wicketkeepers in Test cricket for the highest match aggregate by Kumar Sangakkara. Sangakkara’s previous total of 244 runs (230 and 14) against Pakistan in Lahore was surpassed by Pant’s combined 252 runs (134 and 118).
