Rege participated in 52 Ranji Trophy first-class matches between 1966–1967 and 1977–1978, taking 126 wickets through his offbreaks. He also scored 1532 runs at an average of 23.56. Following his playing career, Rege served in several roles with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), including Mumbai Ranji selector and chief of Mumbai Ranji selector during different periods. Also, Rege supported Mumbai’s domestic cricket team’s employment of a video analyst in 2006, making them one of the first to employ the sport’s then-new tool.

Milind Rege and former legendary cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, have known each other since they were children. Together, the legends played in Dadar Union Sporting Club. Gavaskar gave a heartfelt homage, saying, “He was like my older brother. We grew up in the same building, attended the same school, and attended the same college. In the compound, we played cricket with tennis balls.” Mumbai as well as the Vidarbha team in the current Ranji Trophy semi-final in Nagpur conducted a moment of silence in Rege’s memory before the start of the third day of play. The Mumbai players wore black armbands; many of them made their first-class debuts during his tenure as Mumbai Ranji selector.

Sachin Tendulkar’s Message to Rege

Additionally, in 1988, Rege was a member of the selection committee which included a young Sachin Tendulkar on Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team. Notably, it was none other than Rege, who gave the master blaster his first maiden call-up in Ranji Cricket. That said, when Rege passed away, Sachin Tendulkar expressed his sorrow and referred to him as a “True Mumbai Cricketer.”

The passing of longtime Mumbai captain and scout, Milind Rege, was lamented by legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar took to his X account to write a deep heartfelt message about Milind Rege’s passing, “Sad to hear about Milind Rege Sir’s passing. He was a true Mumbai cricketer with immense contributions to the city’s cricket. He and other CCI members saw potential in me and asked me to play for CCI, which, as I look back now, was a landmark moment in my career.”

Conclusion

Milind Rege continued to be actively associated with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) after retiring. He played a crucial role in developing domestic cricket in Mumbai and the country overall. The passing of Rege has left the cricket world in mourning. He discovered many legendary players, and his contributions will never be forgotten by the fans.
