Jasprit Bumrah is once again in the news, as fans eagerly await his update on whether he will play in the 4th Manchester Test, with India trailing the series 1-2. After suffering injury to his back and also undergoing surgery, Jasprit Bumrah’s workload has been carefully monitored by the BCCI medical staff, as he is a generational talent who needs to be safeguarded properly.

Is Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of 4th Test? The question still haunts the minds of many die-hard fans. Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee already indicated, Jasprit Bumrah can play any 3 of the 5 Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The ace speedster had already sat out of the Edgbaston Test, which India won emphatically by 336 runs. As the visitors suffered another blip at the iconic Lord’s Test, where they fell short by 22 runs, the management has hinted, leaning towards playing Jasprit Bumrah at the Manchester Test.

Bumrah’s Workload Management
Jasprit Bumrah’s workload will always be in focus when he represents the country in marquee series. He has missed out on many flagship events, including the 2022 T20 World Cup, the WTC 2023 Final, and the Champions Trophy 2025, because of back-related stress. So the BCCI selectors have come up with the idea of playing him in only 3 matches before the start of the series.

To give more rest for his back, reportedly, they wanted him to play the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Test matches. Coaching panel headed by Gautam Gambhir went with a similar pattern, playing him in the 1st Test at Headingley, Leeds, and the 3rd Test at Lord’s. They rested him for the 2nd Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, which India won to level the series 1-1. Despite having the 8-day break between the 1st and 2nd Test, he didn’t feature in the Edgbaston, which didn’t impress the former cricketers, including Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri.

He has bowled 86.4 overs so far in the ongoing Test series, picking up 12 wickets, which includes two 5-wicket hauls. Jasprit Bumrah’s workload will be given top priority before the Manchester Test, which kicks off on July 23rd.

Why Bumrah Must Start in the Manchester Test?
Jasprit Bumrah is the No.1-ranked ICC Test bowler, who brings a lot to India’s bowling setup with his unique skillset. With the unusual point of release, many batters have struggled to pick him, becoming a victim of him on many occasions. He brings the ball sharply on any surface and also nips the ball away from the batters.

In his 47 Tests so far, he has picked up 217 wickets with the best figures of 6 for 27 in an innings. With his abundance of talent, every team wants him to play at the crucial stage, and India are also keen to pick him for the 4th Test, as they are trailing by a 1-2 margin with 2 games to be played.

If they rest him for the Manchester Test and they lose, there is no point in resting him as it’s a crucial match of the series and India needs their No.1 bowler in the line-up at any cost. There is a nine-day gap between the 3rd and the 4th Test, which is enough for him to rest. The answer will be no to the question: is Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of 4th test?

The Risk Factor
The young Indian brigade led by Shubman Gill has created a lot of buzz in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, taking the game to the 5th and final day in all 3 Tests, which is a testament to their character. They were in the game for most of the 1st and 3rd Tests, which they lost purely because of the brave efforts from the hosts at the final stages.

With Shubman Gill’s heroics, India triumphed in the 2nd Test at Edgbaston, marking their first-ever victory at the venue in 58 years. Now all eyes will be on the 4th Manchester Test, which will be the most significant one as the loss will end India’s hopes of winning the Test series on English soil after 18 years. So India needs their strike bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, to lead the troops as his on-field presence will lift the entire side.

In case he misses out, the entire responsibility will be on Mohammed Siraj, who has bowled 109 overs in the series so far. Taking Siraj’s workload also into consideration, it’s better to play Jasprit Bumrah in the 4th Manchester Test, which will be the ideal balance. Bumrah’s availability is a must for India for the 4th Test, which will be the major option for them to level the series 2-2.

Views of the Assistant Coach
Speaking to the press after the training at Beckenham, India’s Assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, said, “We know we have got him for one of the last two Tests. It’s pretty obvious that the series is on the line now in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him.

“But again, we have got to look at all the factors: how many days of cricket are we going to get up there, what do we feel is our best chance of winning that game, and then how that fits in together with The Oval, and looking at the last two games holistically as part of the series.
