What a night that was in Navi Mumbai! A truly unforgettable entry in the Women’s Cricket World Cup final highlights reel. Under the humid lights of the DY Patil Stadium, 45,000 fans roared their hearts out as the India Women’s National Cricket Team finally did it. After years of “so close yet so far,” they’ve become the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup champions for the very first time.

A Rain Delay, Then Fireworks
A two-hour rain delay couldn’t dampen the energy. When the covers finally came off, India chose to bat, and what a choice that turned out to be. Shafali Verma, called into the side only in the semi-final, played like she had been waiting her whole life for this. Her 87 from 78 balls was pure fireworks: drives through the covers, flicks off the hips, and even a towering six down the ground. Smriti Mandhana’s 45 and Deepti Sharma’s cool-headed 58 helped India post 298 for 7, a total that felt competitive, but far from safe.
Talk about making an impact 🫡

The South African bowlers had their moments, Ayabonga Khaka’s 3 for 58 stood out, but the dropped catches will haunt them. Five in total, including one when Shafali was on 56, and another that spared Deepti twice. “We were outplayed today,” admitted South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt afterwards. “India played fantastically well.”

South Africa’s Chase — Hope and Heartbreak
When the Proteas came out to bat, all eyes were on Wolvaardt, the most elegant run-maker of the tournament. And she didn’t disappoint. Her fluent 101 from 98 balls had the crowd nervously glancing at the scoreboard. For a while, it looked like South Africa were pulling off something special. But then came Deepti Sharma’s golden spell, the off-spinner ripped through the middle order, finishing with 5 for 39. Her mix of flight, dip, and control was breathtaking.

The key moment? Wolvaardt, eyeing another boundary, miscued Deepti high to deep mid-wicket. Amanjot Kaur juggled the catch three times before finally holding on, the crowd went wild. The Proteas folded for 246, losing by 52 runs. As the stadium clock passed midnight, the fans stayed put, chanting and waving flags in tears and triumph. This was the night India had long dreamed of.

Heroines of the Final
The Women’s Cricket World Cup final highlights will forever feature Shafali’s daring shots and Deepti’s all-round brilliance. Even the part-timers chipped in, Shafali grabbed two wickets herself, turning from batting star to unlikely bowling heroine.
“We wanted to break this barrier,” said captain Harmanpreet Kaur after lifting the trophy. “This is just the beginning.”
And maybe she’s right. Because this win didn’t come easy. India had lost three group-stage matches, looked out of form, and faced favourites Australia in the semis. But ever since that thrilling semi-final win, the momentum, and belief, felt unstoppable.

A Win Bigger Than Cricket
Becoming the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup champions is more than just lifting a trophy. For the India Women’s National Cricket Team, it’s a cultural moment — the end of decades of heartbreak and near-misses. For too long, the women’s crown was the property of England, Australia, or New Zealand. But this time, India broke the pattern, and perhaps, the old hierarchy too. Former wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik summed it up beautifully:
“There are a lot of young girls in India who will be watching this, and somewhere, someone will pick up a bat and say, I want to do something like this.”
You could feel that in the stands. Fathers holding daughters high, faces painted blue, eyes wide with pride.
