Virat Kohli’s T20 record became even more alluring and illustrious when he became the first Indian and only the fifth player in the world to have achieved more than 13000 runs in T20 cricket. Meanwhile, besides augmenting Virat Kohli’s T20 record, his innings also saved RCB from a sticky situation when opener Phil Salt fell on just the second ball of the innings delivered by Trent Boult. Even after achieving a half-century and breaking records in the match, he still emphasised the need to improve and improvise. He said, “My strength is to get a feel of the ball early, and once I do that, I can play the shots I want. I tried to innovate, played different shots against spin, and targeted various parts of the ground. In T20s, you have to keep evolving and respond to the situation.”

On April 3, 2007, Kohli made his Twenty20 debut for Delhi against Himachal Pradesh in the Inter-State Twenty-20 Tournament, which was subsequently renamed the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy. He scored 35 runs in the match. From there, Virat Kohli now stands on 13,001 runs from just 403 matches (386 innings) – the 2nd fastest 13000 runs in T20 history. With nine hundreds in his career – eight of which have come in the IPL – Kohli also tops the list among Indian batsmen.

Now get this – it’s like all of Kohli’s big T20 moments seem to happen right there in the IPL. Back in the 2021 season, when he hit 10,000 T20 runs, he was the third-fastest to do it, only behind the legends Babar Azam and Gayle. And then, just last year in IPL 2024, he zoomed past 12,000 T20 runs, making him the second-quickest to that mark, again with only Gayle ahead of him. It’s pretty wild how these major milestones keep popping up for him in the IPL, his home ground, you know? It just shows how much of a force he is in that league.

What makes this connection even more interesting is the fact that out of his total T20 runs, over 8000 have come from the IPL. Now, isn’t that something? In addition to his 424 runs in 15 Champions League games as an RCB player, Kohli has amassed 8119 runs in 256 IPL games for the Bengaluru-based team.

So it was a bit of a bummer when Kohli hung up his boots for the T20 Internationals in the middle of last year, especially coming right after he helped India lift that second T20 World Cup trophy in the US. Over his 125 T20I matches, he put up a fantastic 4,188 runs, averaging almost 49 with a really solid strike rate. He even smashed a century and 38 half-centuries!

But here’s the cool part: when you look at all T20 cricket, across every league and international game, Kohli is the top Indian scorer with a massive 13,001 runs from 403 matches. Rohit comes in second for India, but he’s quite a bit behind.

And it’s not just about runs! In the recent IPL opener for RCB against Kolkata, Kohli played his 400th T20 match – can you believe that?
