Sunrisers Hyderabad are nearing the halfway mark of IPL 2026, having already completed their first seven games. The Orange Army have shown significant improvement in their overall team performance, securing a hat-trick of wins in their last three outings. At this stage, the team management will have a new healthy headache to tackle, as skipper Pat Cummins’ IPL return is getting closer, with him available from April 25th against Rajasthan Royals at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

So far, Ishan Kishan was SRH captain in IPL 2026, but he is set to step down and pass the baton to the Australian quick, who is ready to take the side to the next level. At the start, Ishan Kishan’s captaincy was questioned, as SRH managed to win only one of their first four matches. However, he later turned things around, leading the team to three consecutive victories.

Good News for SRH:Pat Cummins’ Recovery
Cricket had truly missed a fierce competitor like Pat Cummins for a while, and his comeback is now on the cards, with Cricket Australia declaring him fit to participate in the cash-rich Indian Premier League. Cummins will resume leadership duties from Saturday against the Rajasthan Royals, which means Ishan Kishan’s captaincy will come to an end, although he has done an excellent job marshalling the troops.

At the time of writing, Sunrisers Hyderabad sit fourth on the table with eight points. They also became the third team in IPL 2026 to win three matches on the bounce. The Australian Test skipper last played a competitive game during the home Ashes against the England cricket team in December 2025, which was his only appearance in the five-match high-profile Test series. Interestingly, Cummins has featured in only five matches for the Australia national cricket team since IPL 2025, all of which came in the longest format.

Pat Cummins’ IPL return is great news for the Orange Army fans, who are eager to see their favourite player back in action. He underwent scans for a lumbar back stress injury last week, and the results were positive, confirming that he has fully recovered. Due to this injury, he had missed the marquee ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 as well as the majority of the Ashes.

How’s Ishan Kishan’s Captaincy in IPL 2026
Ishan Kishan’s captaincy has received plenty of applause as Sunrisers Hyderabad bounced back from a rough start. When things weren’t going their way, he played a key role in bringing in rookie pacers Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain, with the duo picking up four wickets each against the Rajasthan Royals to secure a comfortable 57-run victory last week in Hyderabad. Earlier, Kishan had set the tone at the top with a blistering 91 off 44 balls.

His bowling changes and ability to handle pressure were spot on. He looks like a man on a mission, which is why critics continue to rate him highly to continue as SRH captain in IPL 2026. The added responsibility did not affect the Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter, who has been outstanding with the bat, scoring 238 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 188.88.

Who Should Captain SRH for The Rest of the Season?
Ishan Kishan’s rise as an SRH leader in the absence of Pat Cummins has sparked a lot of debate among the cricketing fraternity, with many picking Kishan over Cummins to lead the side for the remainder of the tournament. Kishan has earned the fans’ respect, and he is ready to deliver what the management expects from him.

Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad, who reached the finals a couple of years back, had a mediocre run last season, finishing 6th on the table with 13 points. Cummins, who led the side on both occasions, is the front-runner to take over captaincy responsibilities for the remainder of the season.

Considering the circumstances and knowing both Kishan and Cummins, the latter is the right fit to be the SRH captain in IPL 2026. Will Pat Cummins’ IPL return hand Sunrisers their 2nd title? We need to wait and watch.
