The Mumbai Indians endured another disappointing season in IPL 2026, going trophyless for the sixth straight year. With Hardik Pandya’s captaincy hitting an all-time low in the cash-rich league, the five-time champions turned to India’s T20 World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav to lead the side, citing back spasms as the reason for Hardik’s unavailability.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Captain Debut

When Suryakumar Yadav missed the game against the Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on Thursday due to personal reasons, everyone was surprised to see Jasprit Bumrah as Mumbai Indians captain. He became one of the few bowlers to captain an IPL franchise. He also became only the second bowler captain in IPL of Mumbai Indians after Harbhajan Singh, who led the side in 30 matches between 2008 and 2012.

Jasprit Bumrah made his debut for the Mumbai Indians back in 2013, and after 13 years, he marked his captaincy debut for the franchise and helped the side win the game. The Mumbai Indians captain list continues to grow, with the franchise using three different captains in IPL 2026. This marked a rare occurrence that happened for the first time in 18 years, after Harbhajan Singh, Shaun Pollock, and Sachin Tendulkar led the franchise during the inaugural IPL season in 2008.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Performance in First Outing as Skipper

Having already dropped out of playoff contention, the atmosphere in the Mumbai Indians camp looked much calmer compared to recent games, especially during the close contest against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where they suffered a last-ball defeat. Full marks to Jasprit Bumrah as Mumbai Indians captain, as he manoeuvred the side really well with timely rotation of bowlers against the Punjab Kings, particularly during the middle phase. The side controlled the opposition brilliantly by taking seven wickets between the 12th and 18th overs while conceding only 59 runs.

Bumrah’s captaincy stint began with a bang as the side cruised to a six-wicket victory, chasing 200 with a ball to spare. Much of the credit goes to a brilliant knock from Tilak Varma, who smashed an unbeaten 75* off just 33 balls, including six fours and as many sixes. Not to forget the contributions from overseas players Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks, who scored 48 and 25* respectively.

The role of a bowler captain in IPL looks challenging as not many teams have explored the option this season, barring Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have a full-time bowling captain in Pat Cummins. Whether Bumrah adds more value to the Mumbai Indians captain list, which has legends, we need to wait and see.

Bowler Captains in IPL – The Count Is Very Low

Shane Warne, Anil Kumble, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Pat Cummins are among the few bowlers who have led their respective franchises on a full-time basis. In a batter-dominated tournament, it is no surprise that only a rare group of bowlers have captained sides in the IPL. The newest addition to the list is Jasprit Bumrah, who made his captaincy debut in style with a win over the Punjab Kings.

Jasprit Bumrah, who was the joint-leading wicket-taker in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup with 14 scalps, has surprisingly endured a dip in form in the ongoing IPL 2026 season, managing only three wickets in 12 matches at an underwhelming average of 128. The management is likely to take this into account before considering him as a long-term captaincy option.
