The book titled, Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom has drawn interest from the cricket fraternity due to a controversial revelation from the Afghanistan spinner. The book mentions that Rashid Khan was offered Indian citizenship and Australian citizenship, but he declined both offers. Mohammad Haand Jafar is the author of the book, which follows Rashid’s journey on how he missed out on the Afghanistan national cricket team U19 trials to become one of the finest spinners in the world. Let’s take a look at reasons behind India’s interest in the spinner and is Rashid Khan going to play for India in the future?

Reasons Behind India’s Interest in Rashid Khan’s Services

Rashid Khan made his ODI and T20I debuts in October 2015 at an age of 17. In a matter of a few games, the then youngster became the chief wicket-taker of the Afghanistan national cricket team. During the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, Rashid became the first Afghan player to play in the cash-rich league. 2023 was the finest IPL season for the spinner, as he finished with 27 wickets in 17 games and was third on the bowling charts. However, during this season, Rashid Khan was offered Indian citizenship. In his interaction with author Jafar, Rashid revealed that a high-ranking official from the Indian cricket board offered him an informal citizenship, which would allow him to play for India.

“I received such offers (citizenship and playing) from both Australia and India. But I told them, ‘If I don’t play for my country, I won’t play for any other country either,’” Rashid was quoted as saying in the book.

According to Rashid, the official was interested in arranging all documents required to grant him Indian citizenship. However, the spinner was respectful with his response to ignore the offer and remained loyal to his nation.

“I went over and greeted him. We started talking, and he said: ‘The situation in your country (Afghanistan) is very bad. Come stay in India. We will give you Indian documents, live here, play cricket here.’ I was surprised by what he was saying and didn’t know how to respond. But I smiled and said, ‘Thank you very much. I am playing for my country, Afghanistan,’” Rashid added.

The 27-year-old also recalled a social media campaign by the Indian fans after his exploits during an IPL 2018 game for the Sunrisers against Kolkata Knight Riders. He displayed an all-round effort to score 34* off 10 and picked three wickets to help the side end their four-game losing streak. The fans urged the government to grant Rashid Indian citizenship and also tagged then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. She replied that all matters related to these matters are taken care of by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
