India Squad for Afghanistan ODI Series — Surprise Picks and Brutal Omissions Explained

India squad for Afghanistan ODI series reflects a clear shift towards experimentation ahead of the next ODI World Cup cycle, with several young players earning maiden call-ups. Selection calls around form, role balance continue to define India’s evolving 50-over strategy.

The India squad for Afghanistan ODI series has been announced by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee on May 19th, Tuesday. With next year’s ODI World Cup in mind, the selectors want to experiment with the all-rounders and the bowling setup as they make wholesale changes to the squad. There are no changes made in the batting setup, which features the veteran duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Shubman Gill continues to lead the side, with Shreyas Iyer being named as his deputy. The upcoming India vs Afghanistan ODI series will see three fresh faces in the Indian colours. Left-arm spinning all-rounder Harsh Dubey, fast bowlers Gurnoor Brar and Prince Yadav have earned their first call-up into the National side.

Fresh Faces Picked for India vs Afghanistan ODI Series

It seems like the selectors are too keen to experiment and want to groom the young all-rounders; as a result, veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been rested. In his place, the 23-year-old Vidarbha all-rounder Harsh Dubey, who is part of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the ongoing IPL 2026, comes into the squad.

Speedster Gurnoor Brar, who enjoyed a fruitful season for Punjab during the Vijay Hazare Trophy last season, claiming 11 scalps in 8 matches, gets his maiden call-up to the National side. He is 6 feet 5 Inches tall, and he is going to be the bowler to keep an eye on.

The 24-year-old right-arm quick, Prince Yadav, has been growing from strength to strength as a bowler over the last year, and his performances were rewarded as he has been picked up for the India vs Afghanistan ODI series. He too had a successful stint in the Vijay Hazare Trophy last season, finishing as the leading wicket-taker for Delhi with 18 wickets in 8 matches. His performances are not limited to the domestic circuit, and he even performed exceptionally well in the IPL 2026, where he currently tops the leading wicket-charts for Lucknow Super Giants with 16 wickets in 13 matches.

Surprise Selections and Omissions in India Squad For Afghanistan ODI Series

India vs Afghanistan ODI series selection has thrown a lot of surprise omissions and call-ups.

Rishabh Pant

Among the 15-member squad, there is no place for Rishabh Pant, following his inconsistent run in the ongoing IPL, though he didn’t get a lot of opportunities ever since his return to the 50-over format in August 2024. He had played a solitary ODI after recovering from the brutal accident he sustained on December 30, 2022. His omission from the India squad for Afghanistan ODI series is a surprise.

Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan, who was part of the 2026 T20 World Cup winning squad, takes Pant’s place and will serve as backup wicket-keeper for experienced KL Rahul. Kishan has been rewarded for his sublime show in the IPL 2026, where he aggregated 490 runs in 13 games at a strike rate of close to 180. The 27-year-old has last played an ODI during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at home. In 27 matches overall in the format, he has gathered 933 runs at an average of 42.4. His selection for the India vs Afghanistan ODI series wasn’t expected and came as a surprise for many.

Harsh Dubey

Harsh Dubey holds the record for the most wickets in a single Ranji Trophy season, bagging 69 wickets in the 2024-25 season and was primarily rated as the red-ball bowler. Selectors not only picked him up for the solitary test against Afghanistan, but also included him in the India squad for Afghanistan ODI series.

Despite his average returns during the Vijay Hazare Trophy last season, where he picked up 10 wickets in 10 matches and managed 83 runs in 8 innings with the bat at a healthy strike rate of 127.69. His selection definitely came out of the box for the 50-over format, as selectors might have seen some special ability in him and wanted him to fast-track for the highest level.

Gurnoor Brar and Prince Yadav

With ace speedsters Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj rested for the India vs Afghanistan ODI series, selectors have picked up young right-arm quicks Gurnoor Brar and Prince Yadav as replacements. Selection of both quicks took a surprise for everyone, while chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the reason behind their selection, saying,

“With Gurnoor, we have seen a lot of promise over the last season-and-a-half now, a tall guy with a bit of pace. Again, keeping the South African World Cup in mind, we are obviously going to try a few guys who, at that point, might be useful if they keep developing.”

“Prince Yadav has shown a lot of promise through the domestic season. I think he had a really good Vijay Hazare. Obviously, bowled well in the IPL. But we have seen that he has grown a lot as a bowler over the last year or so. And again, has the necessary skills to succeed with the white ball.”
