After Connolly’s wicket, Travis Head opened his arms and started scoring at a good pace against the Indian pacers but his innings was cut short by the introduction of Varun Chakravarthy. Varun Chakravarthy got the better of Travis Head who could only manage to miss-time a lofted short to get caught at Mid-on. After the fall of the second wicket, the experienced middle order batting pair of Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne then steadied the ship. The Australian captain, Steve Smith, played a pivotal role in anchoring the innings from one end with a crafty 73-run innings. Marnus Labuschagne, on the other hand, provided valuable support up till he got trapped in front of the stumps of a delivery of Ravindra Jadeja.

Josh Inglish joined Steve Smith after the wicket of Labuschagne but wasn’t able to stay on the crease for a long period. With two quick wickets, India turned the tie in their favour. For Australia to come back into the game, it required a steady partner that could help them reach a total beyond 270. Alex Carey came at the crease to join Smith, who from the onset looked hell-bent on scoring freely, which he was able to do for a good period. Partnership between Carey and Smith reached the 50 run mark, 38 runs out of those, came from Carey’s bat.

After being the sheet anchor for the majority of the Australian innings, Steve Smith decided to go after Mohammed Shami to up the scoring rate but lost his wicket in trying to hit a ball over covers, which resulted in the loss of his wicket. Smith’s wicket became a pivotal point in the game as, after Smith’s wicket, the pace at which Australia desired to score runs in the back end of the innings was hampered.

Despite a late surge from Australia’s lower-middle order, the team couldn’t capitalize fully, concluding their innings at 264. This total, while competitive, seemed attainable given India’s batting depth. India’s bowlers maintained consistent pressure. Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, continuing his impressive form, was introduced early into the attack and managed to contain the Australian batsmen effectively. Pacer Mohammed Shami delivered crucial breakthroughs, including the dismissal of Ben Dwarshuis, showcasing his knack for striking at vital moments, enhancing the excitement of the match between India vs Australia in Champions Trophy 2025.

India’s Chase
Chasing a total of 265, which seemed a touch above par on the Dubai Cricket Ground, the Indian innings began on a cautious note as Shubman Gill, on one end, tried to see off the new ball but failed to do so as he chopped one delivery back onto his stumps of Ben Dwarshius.

The Indian Captain, Rohit Sharma, tried to score freely and got some impetus to the Indian Innings, but with the introduction of spin, Rohit was dismissed. Amidst the pressure of losing quick wickets up top, India’s veteran match winner Virat Kohli emerged as the star of India’s innings while getting into his zone of anchoring the chase. Kohli played a remarkable innings of 84 runs.

The highlight of the masterful innings by Kohli was the sheer volume of runs that he took by running between the wickets; the innings of 84 runs consisted of 50 singles with three doubles. Kohli’s ability to rotate the strike made sure that the scorecard kept ticking. India’s formidable number four Shreyas Iyer complemented Kohli and the duo stitched a formidable partnership in the middle overs before Iyer got cleaned up on a delivery by Adam Zampa just on the cusp of his fifty.

As the match progressed, Australia sought breakthroughs to get back into the game; the introduction of both spinners Adam Zampa and debutant Tanveer Sangh aimed to take advantage of any weaknesses in India’s batting. While Zampa managed to maintain a tight line, Sangh faced challenges against experienced Indian batsmen.

After the loss of Kohli’s wicket with the team still needing 40 runs, the arrival of Hardik Pandya at the crease also displayed some nervous moments for India before he smashed Adam Zampa for two sixes in a row to ensure that the game was almost sealed. KL Rahul scored the winning runs by hitting a six of Glenn Maxwell on the first ball of the 49th over while Ravindra Jadeja accompanied him in the middle.

[Match Strategy] India vs Australia in Champions Trophy 2025

Australia’s decision to bat first was influenced by the dry and cracked nature of the pitch, anticipating it would deteriorate and offer more assistance to spinners in the second innings. This strategy aimed to capitalize on batting-friendly conditions early on and then leverage their spin attack to pressure India’s chase.

India, on the other hand, fielded an unchanged XI, reflecting confidence in their balanced lineup. The inclusion of three frontline spinners, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Varun Chakravarthy and Azar Patel, was a tactical move to exploit the pitch conditions, which paid dividends by restricting Australia’s total.

Turning Points
- Wickets at crucial intervals: Australia’s inability to build sustainable partnerships due to wickets falling at regular intervals allowed India to dictate terms with their spinners during the middle overs.
- Kohli-Iyer Partnership: Their steadying stand not only stabilized India’s innings but also ensured the required run rate remained manageable, setting the platform for the final assault.
- Pandya’s Cameo: Despite his brief stay, Pandya’s aggressive approach added momentum to India’s chase, making sure that the game was sealed in India’s favour without any late twists.
