Shubman Gill recently etched his name into history books with a scintillating 269-run knock in the second fixture of the five-match series against England at Edgbaston. With this knock, he became only the third Indian cricketer to score double century in England.

Indian Cricketers to Score Double Century in England
Interestingly, Gill had scored only 88 runs in three Tests at a dismal average of 14.66 in England ahead of this series. With consistent scores in the first two games, he now holds a terrific average of around 60 in the country. Historically, there have been many cricketers who have converted their starts into double centuries but not many of them have done it in England. Let’s take a look at who two other Indian cricketers apart from Shubman Gill have notched up 200+ scores in Tests on English soil.

3. Rahul Dravid – 217, 2002
Rahul Dravid became the second Indian cricketer to score double century in England in September 2002. He reached the milestone during the fourth and final Test of the bilateral series at The Oval. The English side batted first and was led brilliantly from the front by Michael Vaughan (195). The contributions by the lower middle order paved the way for them to post 515 on the board.

In response, the visitors lost Virender Sehwag (12) early, which resulted in Rahul Dravid arriving at the crease. Nevertheless, Dravid looked comfortable in negotiating the opposition’s attack and garnered consistent boundaries to infuse confidence into the side. After Bangar (21) was dismissed, Rahul Dravid found support from Sachin Tendulkar (54), Sourav Ganguly (51) and VVS Laxman (40).

In the end, Dravid was dismissed for 217 off 468 owing to an unfortunate run-out. Nevertheless, his contributions ensured India ended on 508. Then, England was at 114/0, before the match ended in a draw.

2. Sunil Gavaskar – 221, 1979
In December 1979, Sunil Gavaskar became the first Indian cricketer to score a double century at the Oval in England. It all happened in the fourth and final fixture of the red-ball series between both teams. Batting first, England posted a 305-run total, courtesy of Graham Gooch’s 79-run knock. In response, India were bundled out for just 202, with Gundappa Viswanath (72) emerging as the top-scorer.

Taking advantage of a big lead, the home side declared on 334/8, riding on Geoff Boycott’s (125) century. As a result, they set up a tough chase of 438 for the Indian team. At this point, India needed a solid start to remain alive in the game. The opening pair of Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan came to the team’s rescue. The duo stitched a credible 213-run stand to dominate the opposition before Chauhan (80) was dismissed.

Nevertheless, Sunil Gavaskar steered the team with his measured approach and looked at ease against the English bowling attack. Gavaskar ensured to dispatch the bad balls to the boundary and carried the team along well with Dilip Vengsarkar (52). Sunil Gavaskar was eventually dismissed for a stellar knock of 221 off 443 balls, which comprised 21 boundaries. Gavaskar’s knock helped India to salvage a draw, as they ended on 429/8.

1. Shubman Gill – 269, 2025
Shubman Gill created a plethora of records with his stunning knock in the Edgbaston Test against England in July 2025. There were doubts about the Indian skipper’s credentials as a batter on overseas soil, but he made sure to prove them all wrong with his improved technique and solid defence. Invited to bat first, India lost KL Rahul (2) early. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Karun Nair (31) put together a crucial 80-run stand. Then, Gill came to the crease at No. 4 when India were at 95/2.

Gill assessed the pitch well and found the fence for the first time in his 34th delivery. He soon found the groove and secured consistent boundaries to keep the team’s momentum intact. Shubman Gill added 65 runs for the third wicket with Jaiswal (87). Then, he found strong partners in the form of Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42).

Gill eventually was dismissed for a sensational knock of 269 off 387 balls, which included 30 fours and three sixes. The 25-year-old missed out on a golden chance to create history by breaking Virender Sehwag’s record (319) of highest individual knocks by an Indian player in Tests. Along with becoming the third Indian cricketer to score double century in England, Shubman Gill rewrote history books to create multiple records. Gill registered the highest score by an Indian player in England, with the previous best being Sunil Gavaskar’s 221. He also became the first Asian captain to score a double ton in England.

Final Words
Interestingly, Shubman Gill’s 269-run knock was also the highest by an Indian batter outside Asia. Previously, Sachin Tendulkar hit 241 at Sydney in 2004. As a result of Gill’s knock, India posted a mammoth total of 587 and helped India eventually win the Edgbaston Test by a huge margin of 336 runs to level the 5-match Test series 1-1. The Anderson-Tendulkar Test Series will now move to the Home of Cricket – The Lord’s for the third test match. With Bumrah returning to the 3rd test match and Jofra Archer in the mix for England, we are in for yet another thrilling contest at the Lord’s.
